F-150 Lightning spotted charging : 124kW @ 49% SOC

Lightning spotted charging at an EA station : 124kW @ 49% SOC.

Extended Range has to average ~150kW from 15% to 80% to match Ford's info, so far, so I'm guessing this is a Standard Range truck.

Could be plenty of other theoretical explanations like heat limiting the rate or the ER having a rate much >150kW at lower SOC or something (to keep the average at 150kW despite this being slower), but my guess is that this is an SR.

One more data point!

Any other ideas or theories or observations?

All of the Pro trims on the Ford Lightning tour are ER. Not sure if they've got SRs built at this point. This may be Ford working to tune the charging curve, which is OTA configurable as data rolls in.

6kWh charge rate seems slow.
At that rate, it will take a lot longer than 41 minutes for 15-80% SOC.

Maybe the charger is starting to ramp up charge rate ?

The 124 is in the bottom left. 6kWh is what was put into the truck for the 3 mins it was charging.

Yeah, that's possible... although 6kWh in 3 mins is 120kW, so it's averaging about how much it's putting out. Hard to say. I wish the person who spotted this stayed around and got some more data!

Yah, hard to see what the charger is displaying.

Whenever I plug my PHEV into a public charge station, my mobile app shows the charge rate, charge level, time to complete and most importantly: $ cost....

Yeah, since it's pre-production, it could be anything.

My point is that based on 41 mins to go from 15% to 80%, the ~160kWh Extended Range is going to have to AVERAGE about 150kW from 15% to 80%.

So, 124kW at 49% SOC (about halfway) is too slow to average 150kW all the way up to 80% unless 15%-49% was substantially faster.

But maybe it doesn't have the final charging curve? But you'd think the prototype would be at least as fast as the rate they're already claiming. They must know that they can achieve the claimed rate or they wouldn't have claimed it, I would think.

Remember, the charge rate or curve will vary throughout the cycle.
It will NOT charge at 100% immediately till end.
Charging is usually ramping up at the beginning, then maxing out and then ups/downs of the charge rate until near the end when it tapers off to a trickle...

Yeah, for most EVs, that's true.

If we take Ford at their word based on the info they've given, the Extended Range truck has to charge at basically 150kW all the way from 15% to 80% (like the Audi Etron does).

Why? Because they claim it can go from 15% to 80% in 41 mins.

Based on their A/C charging info, the ER battery is about 160kWh.

160kWh * 65% (going from 15% to 80%) = 104kWh

104kWh / (41 mins/60 mins) = 152kW, average

So, the ER has to charge at an average of ~150kW from 15% to 80%... but it also maxes out at ~150kW. Therefore, the only solution is that it stays right around 150kW all the way from 15% to 80%.

Now, maybe that's not how it works out in real life and it actually maxes out a little higher early on and slows down later like most EVs, but to get from 15% to 80% in 41 minutes, it has to average ~150kW.

Maybe not something to look into too much... but I want a regular looking truck, and check out those good-looking "regular" truck wheels! I realize they could put anything on for testing, but I'm very curious to see what the final appearance options will be.

Those wheels look like the 18" HDPP wheels.

That would make sense because someone at Ford said many of the gas F-150 wheels aren't rated for the extra weight of the Lightning, but the Heavy Duty Payload Package wheels probably would be... or closer than most anyway.

At the fontana event I asked a ford rep about battery sizes.. He told me that:
Standard range battery will be between 90-100kWh
Extended range battery will be around 130kWh

These are usable figures and make sense to me if the the lightning can achieve 2.3m/kwh (similar to the R1T)
