I think you're supposed to remove the outlet panel and lights, then put the bedrug in, and then reinstall the panel and lights. This ensures they are flush and not recessed behind the bedrug. See this other bedrug install video on a powerboost as an example:

I LOVE BedRug. I had one in my 2016.

I spent a lot of extra time on the cutouts that made it look a bit neater, but in hindsight didn't matter that much.

I'm debating whether I even need a full BedRug, or just the lower mat.

Did you ever get a problem with water between the bedrug and bed? I'm thinking about line-x + the classic bed mat for that reason.

I had a cover, so I the bed rarely got wet, so my truck bed always smelled fresh.

When you think about it... Ever since they started making F-150 beds out of aluminum, I've wondered whether any protection is needed. It'll never rust, even if there's tons of scratches, so for me, the BedRug was more about keeping things from moving around, keeping the bed quiet, and for me, keeping it comfortable on my knees when I need to crawl to the back.
