After a discussion on another Thread about the 10K mile service and the dealers battery print out for the battery health, I decided to check it myself.

Based on the CarScanner parameters for SOH, the current status is 100% @ 10k Miles with a battery age of 10.5months.

I have owned, Teslas, VWs, BMWs, and Jeeps (all EVs or PHEV), and I have never seen something like this. Usually the SOH on those other vehicles are less than 100% after 5k miles, let alone after 10k.

Possible explanations:
-The reading is a fluke.
-The reading is correct, and the results are very promising for the long term. In addition, it is a result a very good design from Ford.(battery, thermal management, charge/discharge parameter)

Use case:

-Only about 250kwh on DCF at electrify America.
-Max charge setting at 90%
-about 10-15 charges to 100% for road trips
-Lowest SOC achieved around 10%
-Average SOC including charges and drives 60-70% (I sometimes charge only twice a week without topping off)

I hope the reading is correct! And I hope I did not just jinx myself :)

There is an algorithm used to calculate SoH and the results are not exact. There was a big discussion about this on the Mach-E forum between folks with 70K+ on their cars. The conclusion was that the displayed SoH could vary by at least a few percentage points.

I don’t know all the technical nuances, maybe @MickeyAO could explain it better?

Right.

I was told to charge to 100%, ensure temps are low 70s, and read what the Energy To Empty is. Divide that by the available battery size, i.e. 98 or 131 in the case of the Lightning.

what are you seeing in yours? I think the margin of error is kind of irrelevant based what the calculation would bring up.

• The actual capacity of a new battery is 143.4 KwH
• 143.4 ÷ 131 = 109%
• 70% * 131 = 91.7 KwH
• 91.7 ÷ 143.4 = 64%
• Red string connecting black and white photos on a pin board = Ford has built in a lot of wiggle room in order to meet warranty requirements!

I had 121.54 EtE at 98% SOC, which leads to 124 at 100%, or 124/131 = 94.7%

I then charged, aiming for 100%, but it only got to 99%. 126.57 ETE, which leads to 127.8 or 97.6%

Therefore, margin of error is not irrelevant.

Of course 99% is really 98.7%. Or 99.3%...

My non-engineering head says charge to 100%, with temps in low 70s, and EtE reading is fact.

Thanks! I say irrelevant in terms of miles.
@1.31kwh for each 1% your error is 3.14 miles of range per each 1% error @100%. To me 3-4% error is irrelevant on my day to day driving.

the other way to look at it is that you are getting that buffer for “free”. I do my calculations based on 131kwh which is what they advertised and that’s what I paid for.

This is a well known fact, yes. On the Mach-E, the 2021 had 68 and 88kWh batteries. The 2022 had 70 and 91. Then they updated the software, and the 2021 had the same as the 2022.

The actual battery size is 75.7 and 98.x.

Ford's VP Global EV Programs, Darren Palmer, said in an interview back in 2021 that Ford would release more capacity as they watched usage, and acknowledged that they can simply release capacity before the 8 years / 100,000 miles if necessary to meet the 70%+ threshold.

He also said they'd tweak the charging curve, and they've done that.

And, finally, he said they will eventually tweak all of it on a per person basis (obviously in groups). Those that abuse the crap out of the battery, DC charging all the time, charging to 100% at home, and doing WOTs will get "penalized" or get less "enhancements" than those that exhibit a much more battery-friendly behavior.

Each morning I speak softly to both my EVs as a result. o_O ;) :D

Since you can change the parameter on the model to determine R0, the only thing certain is that number can and will change based on the application. As such, the values we see in the F150 will be different than what we see in the MachE. Moreover, like @RickLightning mentioned before, the value can also be changed for each individual truck.

One may view it as a way to deny battery claims in the next 8 years, but I find this type of a adaptive model as a step ahead.

My truck never hit the EPA range on the GOM, even when finessing it in the most favorable conditions. Maybe 305 once?

My feeling is the battery was degraded. I purchased it with several thousand miles and the cocky salesman even bragged that they kept it charged to 100% at all times. Of course, I let him know that was nothing to brag about.

The GOM cannot be used as a measure of battery SoH.

You are doing better than I am. Until recently I was at 100% SOH but I just came home and read 98.5%. I baby the battery. practically no DC fast charging. Level 2. 30 amp and bellow from 30-70 SOC most of the time. Minimum positive and negative acceleration. The onlything I can think of truck sitting outside (I have no garage) at 90+ degrees temps unplugged. Would it cool the battery if it is plugged? The battery age is 6 months at bellow 5K. Does SOH ever go up?

Edit: It may be a coincidence but it dropped to 98% a few weeks ago (March 24) after 4 kWh of DCFC at a supercharger.
