A Tesla driver here in NC blew past a school bus and hit a kid while using a steering wheel weight. Maybe you’ll get an article in the Washington Post too.

”The Tesla driver, Howard G. Yee, was charged with multiple offenses in the crash, including reckless driving, passing a stopped school bus and striking a person, a Class I felony, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sgt. Marcus Bethea.
Authorities said Yee had fixed weights to the steering wheel to trick Autopilot into registering the presence of a driver’s hands: Autopilot disables the functions if steering pressure is not applied after an extended amount of time. Yee directed a reporter to his attorney, who did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.”

Glad they are charging him with lots of offenses.

Has anyone tried this yet , I find the Blue Cruise is a pain, on and off , put hands back on steering wheel , eyes on the road ? A Tesla owner told me that he uses a steering wheel weight because of all the highway driving he does , it seems the Tesla's have the same issue , on and off ! , I probably going to order one from amazon here is the model I'm going to buy !

I truly can't tell if this is a parady account or not, if it isn't, you could always go this route

A) Its a really bad idea, but sometimes I get the feeling that Alan likes to stir the pot more than asking a legitimate question.

B) On a serious note, at least around here BC is too unreliable to trust with a weight (IF, hypothetically, that would work). Way too many situations where BC craps out mid corner and goes "here, you take over" for me to ever consider using it in any other way, than as intended (i.e. full attention to what's going on around me).

Exactly why I feel it could be a parody account.

Which actually makes it very annoying. On my (older) Tesla constant pressure is enough. I can rest my hands on the wheel.

With The Ford I have to jiggle the wheel constantly. All the beeps and boops. On the highway it’s great. But I need a dumb cruise on the not quite local but quite freeway roads.

Rivian has it best here. It senses touch and not pressure. It’s the most relaxing in terms of recognition.
Yes, touch would be far superior, but for non-highway cruise, turning off the lane centering is just 1 button touch away and takes care of all of those issues.

I wonder if you can defeat the pesky cameras with a mask or pictures. Then you can sleep while comfortably cruising to forever.
I believe the cameras are depth cameras so a picture won't cut it. It views your eyes in 3D even through sunglasses.

I completely forgot about the button!

I know everyone will :poop: all over this post for obvious reasons. But iI'll take the contrary position.

When I use BC, I always keep fingers on the wheel, even in full hands-free mode. There is a comfortable position wherein I can rest my hand on my knee, and fingers on the bottom corner of the wheel (basically holding the wheel, but loosely enough so that it slips between my fingers as it steers itself). This has served me well, as in an emergency, I just tighten my grip instinctively and react. Including countless times I've had to intervene suddenly (usually due to stupidity of another driver).

But much of my highway driving is on non-hands-free routes. And on those routes, my fingers on the wheel doesn't satisfy the hands-on-wheel detection, so it triggers the alert constantly. This forces me to be in a much less confortable position for hours at a time on desolate highways.

I've considered a cheat device for this very reason. To bridge the gap in what I see as a deficiency of the hand detection mechanism. Note however that if I ever did decide to take the plunge on this issue, I definitely would not admit to it here, or anywhere else. 😉

With that said, even though the eye tracking mechanism is similarly flawed (it does NOT approve of me drinking steaming coffee), I wouldn't consider trying to cheat that. It's competent enough, and is truly a decent safety mechanism.
The only reason it is asking you to put your hand on the wheel is because you're not on a full blue Cruise Highway. You're on a semi blue Cruise Road, which you have to move the wheel every 17 seconds. I certainly would not recommend trying to override that because you're on a road that the truck is not fully reading.

That's not accurate. The LKA is reading the lane and tracking just fine. The only difference is that full hands-free is only available on pre-mapped divided highways (mostly only Interstate highways in my area). Many/most of the highways in my state are not Interstates, and not HFBC-enabled. But BC drives on them just fine. I expect this feature enablement to improve over time. But in the meantime, I'd consider cheating, just for the sake of comfort. Like I said, I always keep my hand on the wheel regardless. So I'm not violating the concept in spirit.

Ok it sucks because you have to pull. On my leaf it senses heat and as long as yours touching the steering wheel you're ok
And when it nags it drops your music and phone call, boiling my heart rate.

My mom bitched at me the whole drive because she had the same problem.

Now I'm sure you can find a better place to post this than all caps, but I'd you must, shove a large smart water bottle, partially drunk so it varies pressure, in the wheel spoke. Problem solved.

The combination of camera and wheel is too much. In the rivian at least you can turn off the cam for more frequent wheel nags.
