Today, I took a day trip and when I started the day, I was not sure if I had to use a DCFC to get back so I drove a bit conservatively. I was pleased by the results (2.8 mi/KWh). That made me think we need a thread so we can share tips and tricks to stretch the range so if we are in a bind, we know how to make it to a charging station. To make it fun, I am challenging you guys to beat my 2.8 number. I may edit rules of the game as you guys comment on what make sense. For now, I try to keep it simple so it does not turn people off:

1 - The trip must end where it starts - this should minimize the impact of altitude change and wind if it is a short trip. Remember to reset your trip 1 or trip 2 before you start so you can get the round trip on your screen.

2 - Minimum trip length is 20 miles round trip but longer distance is better to even out the impact of variables.

3 - post a screen shot of trip energy page

4 - share details of the trip and any tips and tricks you used to improve the results.

ofcourse this is honor system and photoshopping results to make it to hall of fame may not help others learn something here.

My trip was all in the same day. Going up in AM, temps were in 70s coming back in PM in 80s. 40 miles of the trip was on highway and I was keeping it around 68 mph. The rest was scenic routes in which I rarely went above 58. I had zero weak moments with accelerator pedal and my break score was high 90s and more often 100. when my windows were up, the fan (but not AC) was on. When all windows were down, the fan was off. My mirrors were folded for 15 minutes at 50 mph. Stereo was on the whole time. Phone charging was less than 20 minutes. I used AC for less than 10 minutes. I thought I charged to 100% but it said 99% when I left. I came back with 33% on a standard pack.

Please bookmark this page and when you get to it, try to show me if you are man enough to stand up to the old lady honking behind you in her Prius and beat the thread record.

Last month, I drove from Dale City, VA to downtown Washington DC and back. Each trip was approximately 32 to 33 miles (the return is slightly longer due to exit ramp configuration).

I 95 has some stop and go traffic, but otherwise, I drive an average of 55 to 57 mph. AC is set to 80. I do not remember the weather. The drive log say I got 2.8 miles per kWh going to DC and 3.0 miles per kWh on the return trip.

Incidentally, my lifetime average over 9,500 miles (one year) is 2.7 miles per kWh. The truck has gone from Dale City to Richmond a few times as well as from Dale City to Newport News and Roanoke, VA once. In the winter, I use the heated seats and steering wheel for comfort. I generally do not precondition.

Man, I can’t believe I am beat already. I was so proud of myself. Looks like you are at 2.9 mi/KWh. I was holding that until my last 30 mile but increased speed and AC must have dethroned me. My life time average is around 2.4.

OK it looks like @rdr854 is the champ at 2.9. Any challengers? Even if you can’t beat it, I am always up for a good story.

I'm not likely to beat any of you, and the first thing that came to mind while reading the rules, are all the 'Massholes" honking at me for holding up the slow lane, personally I'm slow-challenged with a "Need for Speed"

‘Although I didn’t pass many people today. I was not holding up anyone. On one lane roads, I always drove as fast as the car in front of me when I had someone behind me.

on shorter drives, when I am not worried about my SOC, my right foot does occasionally do its own thing.

This is my typical drive into work it's just over 22 miles to and from work. I average 2.9-3.2 in the morning and 2.7-3.1 in the evening (due to a/c use) The first and last 5 or so miles are city driving and the other 12 are highway where I average 50-65mph. At lower speeds with stop n go traffic this truck sips power. My lifetime average is also 2.7 with 8k mile. In the last 2 weeks I've learned to really appreciate the auto setting with my a/c @ 70°-72°

My need for speed was taken care of many years ago by a nice (sincerely meant) Fairfax County police officer on I 66. I then bought a new Ford Fusion hybrid and set out to get better mpg than what was on the sticker - which I did. Of course the best part was the $750 refund from Ford for overstating the mpg (but that is a story for another day).

If you look at the Monroney sticker, you will see that the Extended range truck is rated for 48 kWh per 100 miles which equates to 2.08333333 miles per kWh.

Looks like we have a new champ. I have added running board and a little bit of my rack is sticking out. And I always have extra weight in Frunk. Do you have anything none standard that may help or hurt range?

it is interesting that your tep is 73 but you still spent 4% on exterior temp. I only spent 1% at slightly higher temperatures.

p.s. It is always interesting to see what people listen to (yellow card on the way to work).

Although I am not completely cured and have lapses here and there, I was forced to learn to chill by my last truck. It was a 20 year old frontier and was supposed to have 140 hp but I doubt I was getting half of that. When I pushed the gas pedal all the way down, it made a lot of noises but my speed didn’t change much. I had a sport car at the same time and I noticed the difference between my personality and the way I was driving each one and also how other people where behaving around me. I got a lot more birds offered to me in the sport car and attracted a lot more idiots but no one cared when I was driving the beat up truck. Once I decided to drive the sport car like the truck to see what happens. Ignoring the idiots and not becoming one of them was difficult at first but once I got a hang of it, I noticed my trip was a lot more relaxed and stress free. I even learned to smile at the occasional mad max challenging me before refusing their challenge. Now Lightning with it’s instrument cluster has given me new tools to turn the chill mode into a new sport.

p.s. Fairfax police is brutal. I have never seen tickets for 6 miles over speed limit anywhere else

Folks, this is a reminder, if you plan to take a screenshot remember to reset your trip 1 or trip 2 before starting your round trip. The following is a screen shot of a one way trip I had a while back. Not quiet as useful for our purpose here.

Yeah I only use my a/c on the way home that was a picture from the morning drive. I am a Spotify junkie and Yellow Card tends to get thrown in the Spotify created playlist for me 😂. Nothing in the frunk besides my 12v jump pack and travel charger and some reusable bags. This could be a whole new topic "what are you "Frunking carrying"

I have an ER Lariat and that seems to be the actual number I get with mixed highway (70-73) and city driving.

Interesting proposal. I drive the same 88 mile round trip everyday 220 days a year through all weather, traffic, temperature, wind, etc. my MME averaged 4.1 Spring-summer-fall and 3.5-3.7 winter (temps low 40’s to mid 30’s).

I‘ve 1000 miles on the LT and it is currently averaging 2.4-2.5 on the 88 mile route that I typically complete in 58 minutes each way through speed zones of 25-35-50-55-50-55-40-30-40-50 with 4 stops. Morning temps at 60 and afternoon 65-75. If I’ve a 15+ tailwind at 75 degrees.. no stops, steady 55-58 easy to average 2.7. Since I live on the coast my route also has coastal hills of 100-200 feet so I typically gain 3-4 miles from regen.

Variables:

Terrain:
Elevation gain-loss
Number of stops

Speed: While it relates to terrain, you can control speed and a fixed route doesn’t change posted speeds or stop signs.

Wind-direction: Highly variable and in my case: Dead calm, 15 mile tailwinds or headwinds.

Temperature: Seasonal variation

Load: Jobbers carry tools. I’d guess most like me just haul ass.

My energy to driving 95%-96%.

20 miles hardly seems enough. Pretty sure I could’ve kept this going for another 8 miles…

That calculates out to 1152 miles of range.

I said 20 miles round trip. Give me your best number round trip when you end up where you started and then let’s talk ;). On “This trip”. I have gotten 10.2 as well.

Edit: I am sure someone in Colorado is going to come up with a much more impressive number coming down from one of those 14,000 ft peaks. Even though that does not count, it would be fun to see so anyone has any of those downhill numbers, please share.
