Can't put a thermostat if the pump fluid goes to slow it throws errors and shuts off
the wabasto i just picked up has an external circulation pump could leave that circulating at all times and have the heat cycle on/off on demand if flow is an issue

ok that's good to know, the wabasto itself shuts off and flukes out not the truck from what you are saying

iirc the first gen have an inlet and outlet temp sensor on the wabasto and if there is no rise in temp it will shut down,
the one i just picked up is gen2 ill look into it more, probably the same system, maybe a flow switch that's possible to but i don't think they changed much

did the lighting have any issues with this setup? or just the diesel heater,

Great idea.
For those of us living in the northern climes, you may remember just how the gas heater in VW bugs saved us from the cold weather icing up the windshields ~ 1969... miserable without the gas heater - we had one in two different bugs.

Just got this done.
Espar coolant heater (2-5kW).
Switch in cab with thermostat where the output line from the gasoline heater ties into the heater core.
Working very well so far.
Thanks for the inspiration!

How are you finding your cold weather mileage with this mod?

As always, depends on many factors, biggest of which is speed/head wind.
Recent trip at about -10 C, 100 km/h with a 14 km/h head wind, I got 3 km/kWh.

That's awesome! At -10 I bet this would be closer to 2.4 km/kwh without the diesel heater. Would love to get one of these installed in Ontario

Can this be wired so it only runs when the electric coolant heater is running? That way it shuts off same as the electric and can never overheat your coolant/battery.

I can't believe someone would do this to their Lightning. Ford tested in cold environments. This is a really bad idea.

Not "butt hurt", just amazed that someone would do this without even determining the need (there isn't one).
There is no need? Apparently you don’t live somewhere that can drop to temps of -20f or even -45. I do. Happens every winter and I can tell you that even a gas or diesel truck will benefit from an auxiliary heater to help with a cold start or even just keeping the cab warm.

What i dont understand is why every Ev manufacturer is not offering an auxiliary heater as an option for cold climates. I have driven a couple electric city buses. Proterra and new flyer excelsior. Both use auxiliary heaters in winter to maintain battery range and heat the bus. They get cold easily with the big windows. The only one Iv heard of potentially offering this is Volvo who apparently plans to use an E85 aux heater as a factory option.

This is great! If you wouldn’t mind, could you share some pics of how/where you spliced it into the heater lines?

I KNOW. You are so right.

Why does FORD not offer an extreme cold package that adds the fuel heater? They are just so damn slow at everything.
