I called the service department at my closest EV – rated Ford dealer, Morristown Ford in Morristown, Tennessee today, to make an appointment for my various problems. The service woman said that they couldn’t make an appointment because they only had one EV tech who was certified, and Ford Motor Company required there be two. This seemed a little bit strange. Does that mean if One is on vacation or out sick the other one change his tires? All appointments thus canceled? I called Ford itself and no one had ever heard of such a thing. Maybe it’s a rule; maybe it’s a bad role. Sort of like a fireman on a diesel locomotive. I would imagine that Ford certified EV text are a bit thin on the ground and hard to find. Or forward to require there be two at great additional expense both in training and salary, seems illogical. Thoughts?

According to the dealer I have used they only have one EV tech! So I would call BS on that, but I do not know for sure!

My local dealer has one EV tech. Given the very low adoption of EVs here, one is plenty. I’ve never had to wait over a week to get in.

A discussion with these folks is in order ..... @Ford Motor Company
That won't help and will fall on deaf ears.

One of the largest dealers in our state refuses to work on EVs they didn't sell, and only reluctantly work on those. Apparently (this is anecdotal) the folks that were certified just let their certifications lapse...something to do with the juice not being worth the squeeze.

My dealership has one EV certified tech who is also the 'transmission guy'. Guess which of those two specialities gets used the most?

At some point the education and skills maintenance will payoff, corporate and dealerships need to cultivate the mentality so that these technicians are ready when the needs increase.

Sounds like miscommunication to the person answering the phone or misunderstand at the dealer. There was a proposal that dealers were required to have 2 certified EV techs and if they didn't meet that and all the other criteria they would not be EV certified. But then the dealers took Ford to court for attempting to make them be responsible and won. So that requirement of 2 techs never got implemented

Just to add, my dealership only has one certified EV tech, and my prior dealership only had one also. A bunch of BS.

Morristown Ford didn’t get the memo, I guess. They did get a phone call from Ford yesterday and, I suspect, had a Significant Emotional Experience, as I got a phone message from someone at the dealership who told me how honored they would be to be of service. “Independently owned” notwithstanding, I’m pretty sure they don’t want their next five car haulers to be delivering only Platinum Lightnings.

I called Morristown Ford back this morning and spoke with the service director. He said that the woman that I spoken with was new and she had previously been doing oil changes and did not understand the rules as far as the EV servicing (even though she asked someone). He said that the only time two are required is if they are going to drop the battery because Ford will not reimburse them if they only have one EV tech dropping the battery. It sounded semi-reasonable, and he said that everything else except dropping the battery can be done by Single EV tech, which they have. So I have an appointment for Friday morning to fix the taillight and the Blindspot Module (Which, incidentally, can cause the HVAC to go out as well as other things that you would think are completely unrelated, and probably my taillight problems. As far as the Monitor craziness, that seem to be fixed by the good advice I got here from our friend Henry Ford. A tip of the hat for Henry. No loaner available; he burned through his periodic thousand dollar rental money from Ford for this time. I will simply bring a stack of comic books and a yo-yo. I asked him if he got a call from my friend Emily at Ford motor company and he said he got a message. I’m sure he got the Message. 😎

Amazing what a little bad press will do.

As the old saying goes, “once you have them by the _______ (family channel), their hearts and minds will follow.” Dealerships have very little control over what the company sends them and I imagine he pictured his front parking lot with 100 2025 Lightning platinums.
