  1. Thunderbolt has some dirty weekends (pics & videos) -- offroading in mud, sand, hills

BYD is the second most popular EV brand in Australia, after Tesla (I think it's Kia after that, but don't quote me). They are appearing everywhere I look these days. I think they look quite stylish overall. I haven't really looked into them much as I already had the Tesla Model 3 and they've...
  2. Thunderbolt has some dirty weekends (pics & videos) -- offroading in mud, sand, hills

Note that it wasn't the Lightning's fault for getting stuck in the sand - that was 100% my fault for making the wrong decision (I should have gone down hill and leveled out, and then head back up directly, not across the slope). Our trainer mentioned that any vehicle would have had the same...
  3. Thunderbolt has some dirty weekends (pics & videos) -- offroading in mud, sand, hills

It should do fine. I watched the video and I suspect if they had dropped the tire pressure a bit it would have been simple (not withstanding their software issues). I would have liked to know more about that ghost mode - is it a real time view or constructed from previous vision as you pass...
  4. Thunderbolt has some dirty weekends (pics & videos) -- offroading in mud, sand, hills

Haha, yeah, lots of places to go. Only when required, and that's mostly for badly rutted hills and roads where there's significant height differences between left and right sides, front to back. Otherwise, it really doesn't need it.
  5. Thunderbolt has some dirty weekends (pics & videos) -- offroading in mud, sand, hills

I signed up for a couple of 4WD training courses - off road and sand driving - as this vehicle is my first 4WD. Thought it best to learn some of the basics firsthand. Overall they were not too difficult and the Lightning handled things pretty well. Probably the biggest negative was the longer...
  6. Beach Driving

Dig a hole, put your spare tire in there (angled to make it difficult to pull out), attach winch, chuck some sand over the tire. The resistance can be enough. Also, of course, dig/prep your vehicle as much as possible.
  7. 3D Printing Fun

Here's another thing: I've got wider off-road tires which just poke out the side and this seems to cause more sand, dirt, etc to be thrown up on to the car. I'm thinking of adding some wheel fender flares and so far my research isn't turning up anything ideal. So, I started wondering if I...
  8. Pics of Lightning Trucks Doing Truck Things. Post Yours! 📸

Loaded up the truck with the mower to take to the dealer and get fixed. ;)
  9. 3D Printing Fun

Anyone done or know of a model for a lightning bolt as a "stubby" antenna replacement?
  10. Thunderbolt on a 582km day trip

There are others around, but I have not seen them (it's a big country :) ). But, yeah, it's still pretty unique feeling. We get different reactions depending on the knowledge level. There are many who are really oblivious to EVs in general and we just fly under the radar as another large...
  11. Thunderbolt on a 582km day trip

We live on the Sunshine Coast in Qld, Australia near the town of Nambour and decided to do a drive north to Monto (and Cania Gorge). I plugged the route into ABRP and discovered that the direct route that goes from Gympie to Monto was going to be tight - 10% range left and it wanted me to go 90...
  12. Hello from Queensland, Australia!

The Tesla chargers here use the same CCS2 and while they have been Tesla exclusive, they're slowly opening up the network to non-Tesla. Tesla has just installed some more superchargers in my area, which could be useful for the return leg on long trips. I'm right at the edge of the major Tesla...
  13. Thunderbolt goes to Bellthorpe National Park

For that particular trip, we did about 180 kms, and used 51% of the battery. Over an hour of highway driving, plus a lot of hills. We were out for about 6 hours and I guess breaks might have been about 1 hour worth, so not the most efficient, but very acceptable for day tripping.
  14. Thunderbolt goes to Bellthorpe National Park

Third party business as Ford does not offer it here. I've got a post elsewhere about it.
  15. Thunderbolt goes to Bellthorpe National Park

As you are now no doubt aware from the other posters, I'm in Australia. My vehicle underwent a RHD conversion to be legal here.
  16. Thunderbolt goes to Bellthorpe National Park

We took a drive today to the nearby Bellthorpe National Park for a bit of a look around. On the way, from a lookout towards the Glasshouse Mountains: We stopped at an old forest logging mill for morning tea, where some of the wildlife (magpie and 2 butcherbirds) wanted what we had...
  17. Sand Driving

Try using Lanolin Anti-corrosion lubricant spray underneath before doing the sandy stuff. Then wash everything down afterwards to remove the salt and sand. A technique to help with washing underneath is to pull an oscillating lawn sprinkler through to wash it all off. If you've done the...
  18. Sand Driving

Great to see all the replies, I'm getting a better idea of what is possible.
  19. Sand Driving

What type of tires do you use? AT?
  20. Sand Driving

At 0.7 mi/kWh, I think it would be a bit tight on margin, but I also think I would not be at that level for the whole 70 km. It's a while off before I want to do this, but I might do some tests on real world usage to at least the beach access points first. We have to pay a permit to access...
