I have some questions about this.
With my setup with our Airstream and it having a rear view camera on the back of the trailer, that camera is only active when the headlights are on. So I can attest that we 100% always have the headlights on when towing.

To add to what ChrisP said, verifying the trailer brakes are engaging by a squeeze of the lever is a part of standard hookup and safety checks at the beginning of the towing day every single time.

Yes. Brakes were connected and working as we were mountain driving.
We went from Kremmling CO to Silverthorne, thru the Eisenhower tunnel and descended. Working the whole time. Using them.
Then as we approached the Denver metro it was not working. We had to downshift and use our hazards.
Yes we were in Tow/Haul mode.
We continue to be impressed at all of the little things that make the new F150 a much better tow vehicle than our previous 2014 Tundra.
There's really no comparison at how much better the F150 is for towing and traveling with our trailer.
An added note about trailering with the truck in hilly areas.
On our trip back between Denver and Kansas City we had cleaned the 7 pin and plug with the cleaner, and the trailer brakes worked OK the entire day.

Thank you to the previous posters. We were experiencing this also. Trailer was connected and showing up on the dashboard. Brake controller was showing connected sometimes. Other times nothing we did seemed to get the trailer brakes to show the trailer as connected. We tried unplugging and...
