FWIW, I'm OK with OP using this thing - just check up on the plug FREQUENTLY.
I've had a LEGIT brand (GE) charger melt the outlet. Someone noted "cheap Home Depot" outlet - yeah, best to get something better than consumer grade 14-50R, but even then, check those contacts - unplug ang plug it in now and again to make sure the contacts are clean and there's no sign of melting. My me, the code has changed from "hardwire" to "must have a disconnect" (by means of a 14-50) - I get the disconnect reason, but it creates this melting problem!

It may only be day two but so far I love this thing!!!
Steady 9.1 at 38 amps

I couldnā€™t rely on the connector that came with the vehicle to give me more than 3.1 kw on 220 (would occasionally bump up to five or six for a few minutes). And no one at the dealer was helping me with that just taking my truck for days on end and not addressing the issue.

double check the temp of the wiring and connections of the charger
I had a $200 mobile 48amp charger before, and the charger went up to 65-70C degree after 1.5h of 48amp charging.

Definitely out of my comfort zone, returned and got j+boost portable charger instead and its much cooler and even smaller

Holding at 43C I have been checking it periodically. put a fan on it and itā€™s down to 41 now.
I will update more to this overtime, but I am in agreement with the few here that take no issue with the affordable nature of this. I spoke with a electrician with 35 years experience he assured me everything is properly wired in our shop for the equipment and that it doesnā€™t matter if itā€™s a $3000 component or a three dollar component either could start a fire if things arenā€™t right. He said just use your common sense and monitor it.

sw engineering manager,
Loving the Emporia I bought. Have it hardwired and running at 48 amps. In regards to having a disconnect, the breaker sub-panel is right next to it, so that is satisfied. But yeah, its $399.

Even if you convert to having it hardwired, you will still want to monitor to make sure all the connections are tight and nothing is getting hot. The breaker itself is another weak point where the wires can work loose under the set screw and generate heat. Especially if the screws were never torqued to their specified torque (as actually measured with a torque wrench).

The other thing to consider here is liability.

Using a non-rated charger that even advertises it pulls more power than is legally allowed, will likely invalidate whatever insurance is covering where this is located.

IF something were to happen insurance can come back and say that nothing is covered.

I hated dropping $2400 to get my charger installed when I could have done it for less than half that, but keeping my homeowners insurance valid was worth it.

Life is full of risks some avoidable, some not, most are all about the choices we make. The number one thing that will keep you safe in any situation is being aware of the risks involved. I also have a wood-burning stove to keep warm which if my house burned down my insurance company would probably try to blame that too. Though they are aware of it and chose not to drop me for having a metal box full of fire in my living room. Safety aside I love the heat from it, and I hate the sound of my furnace kicking in. and yes, the number one choice for choosing a woodstove was the same for choosing this charger affordability šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Its a nice saying, except this risk isn't unavoidable. In fact, avoiding it is actually pretty easy

I could never go outside and stay locked in my living room my entire life, and be safe too, but not the choice I make. I mean if safety is the number one concern here flying is a lot safer than driving. Maybe I should trade this in for a plane. Haha. Oh wait I couldnā€™t afford that either.

look, I created this post to share my experience with a bargain level two charger for the people that just simply canā€™t afford the other options not debate the risk versus reward. Just because the first time in my life, Iā€™m able to afford a new (used 6000 miles or I wouldā€™ve gotten this for free šŸ™„) vehicle and have wanted one of these since they first came out. But couldnā€™t afford the fancy stuff. I just shouldnā€™t have gotten a Ford lightning?

I appreciate the constructive criticisms and the concerns and theyā€™ve all been noted. My electrician has actually seen this and has no concerns as long as I keep it at 40. I will monitor daily as Iā€™ve said before this is at work so I am watching this within 50 feet pretty much all the time that itā€™s on it and will check the temps and connections periodically.

next post will be a meaningful update in a few weeks

You completely misunderstand.

I'm not saying you should avoid life or avoid every possible risk

I'm saying that if you spent $200 more on the UL Emporia you wouldn't have to worry about your insurance...

Sheesh dude.

Firmware and software is more than likely Chinese so when you connect with the app, you are giving them access into your wifi system, phone, computers, etc. I would stick with products you can trust.

Got this as a black Friday deal for $204. Plug it in and it works pretty straightforward. The app is not proprietary or necessary (it has RFID cards). Itā€™s just some third-party app for managing a connected home called smart life. Non-coincidentally I canā€™t find any information about country of origin on the packaging the instructions or the website. Pretty sure I have a good guess though. šŸ˜‰

Charging at 46 A and 234 V giving me 10.8 kW. Hoping it holds and this turns out to be a good little unit.

Jeek Vinsen?

Wasn't he a rock'n'roll guitar player back in the day?

He had a tune Race with the Devil didn't he?

Maybe I'm mistaken though...it was more like rock-a-billy

Brief update been using this for a week now. Absolutely love it coming off of the Ford mobile connector. I run it at about 33 or 34 A when I need faster charging and dial it down to 20 to 28 just to make sure Iā€™m at a desired level when I leave work for the day. I would like the ability to safety run it at higher amperageā€™s, but found the conduit and breaker panel buzzing and getting warm to the touch when running at higher amps. Charger itself never got above 44C. The electrician will be by someday to check connections at the panel and junctions for culprits. So far the weakest link sounds like is the wiring.
