Put a Ranch Sierra on last week, mostly for work purposes but ended up camping in the back of it the first weekend. Happy with it - no frills except screened slider windows in the back. No noticeable efficiency changes and have driven 500 miles mixed highway/city/country roads in the last week.

Just over 2 with tax + installation. Definitely the economy option but still not cheap.

Like the look, I want a topper but still trying to find an easy workaround to pop the lid when the tailgate is released.

Yeah you could modify the tailgate piece to be a rubber seal that fit flush with the top of the tailgate but would lose the waterproof nature of how it is right now. No great answer but let me know if you think of something.
