Accidentally missed Reverse and hit Park driving forward at 3-4MPH

I was pulling forward to then back into a parking spot. I was stupid and did not come to a complete stop before going for reverse. I was going about 3-4 MPH and accidentally hit Park instead of Reverse.

The parking pawl grabbed right away and locked up the rear wheels for half a second and the truck stopped.

The the truck seems fine, does not roll away in park or anything 😂.

I know it’s not something you want to do all the time, but on a typical ICE automatic transmission the parking pawl is pretty tough and can handle a couple of these incidents. I’m assuming Ford built the electric motor pawl equally Ford Tough… but wondering if anyone else has done this and had any issues?

i should be fine right?

Not an expert in any sense but here's some context. Unlike older ICE vehicles, any semi-modern ICE vehicles can move the gear shifter into park while moving but IT WILL NOT actually shift into Park until the car is stopped or close to it. There are YouTube videos of this i believe it was a ford fusion).

I think you're fine since the computer thinks you're vehicle is slow enough. Also think about when you're on a small incline/decline and you don't/forget use the parking brakes, thats probably the same amount of slop you'll experience.

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing, the system would prevent anything SUPER harsh and not allow a shift to park. Probably still not great but no real damage.
So far so good and no issues driving it and using park today.

I love his tear down videos. When I saw the battery tear down video, I relaxed about battery replacement. Instead of a $35K pack you can replace just sub-modules.

So per the Munro video, the F-150 has a parking pawl because it can do truck things like tow and have 2-3k bed payload. While the parking brake can hold the truck the parking pawl is like a belt and suspenders approach to safety. E.G you park on a hill in San Francisco with a trailer attached…you don’t want the truck sliding down the hill…

The video shows a pretty hefty pawl design too.

So I think a one off engagement of the pawl at 3-4 MPH should be within tolerance. Again, not that I want do that again but should be fine.

Yea, you're totally fine. Cars are tested extensively for this. Also, above like 6MPH it won't do anything. This is one of the first things I tested when I got mine. Next time you're on the highway go ahead and throw it in reverse and park,, you'll see nothing happens..

I was amused with my old Chevy volt. Put in reverse at any appreciable speed. The back up camera goes on, the backup light goes on. Nothing else happens (maybe excess Regen) because either it doesn't actually shift or the electric motor simply sound the other way to slow the vehicle. To go fast in reverse my manual transmission 2017 Tacoma was geared perfectly for going backwards fast (almost the same ratio as second gear, just going the wrong way). It absolutely sucked for towing.
