sw engineering manager,
I'm a bit confused, having never test driven another EV. Does the Rivian not have 2 pedal driving as an option?
No, not really.
The 1-pedal regen on the Rivian had three settings, but even at the lowest setting, it was still pretty heavy deceleration. If you let your foot completely off the accelerator you are going to come to a fairly quick stop.

And yes, it does have a brake pedal, but I don't think the brake pedal does any blended regen braking like the Fords. I think its always friction-only from the brake pedal.

That is my understanding also for the Teslas.

Not the end of the world - easy enough to learn how to drive as is proven by many Tesla drivers every day. But is def a factor in a dealership sales model with testdrives.

You did note your "old" Tesla, but stories like this really skew the bigger picture and try just to take a hack on another brand which hasn't been this way for many years. Your Tesla experience is very old and no longer relevant. All Tesla's since at least 2018 with the 3 and then the Y and shortly there after with the redo of the S and X have all had full 1 pedal. The 3 would roll after a certain slow amount when it debuted, but even that behavior changed probably 6 years ago - full stop with 1 pedal.

Because it is not easier, smoother or more comfortable if the person to whom you are showing it is not accustomed to it. If I were a sales person I would certainly start with two pedal mode if the customer wasn't experienced with 1PD. Last thing I would want is for them to feel like they had to learn to drive all over again because EV.

Introduce it as an option at some point during the test drive, sure, but not as the first impression.

Had the Lightning only been 1 pedal there is no way my wife would have signed off on the purchase. She tried one pedal on a Tesla and absolutely despised it. She doesn't even really like "sport mode" because the regen kicks in too hard and she isn't very adept at feathering the pedal. She typically drives in "normal" mode while I enjoy "sport" mode. Like a previous poster mentioned, I enjoy taking my foot off the pedal and coasting into stops.

Funny aside, my 9 year old was asking me today about accelerators, brakes and the regen. I told him about one pedal driving and he said that sounded the easiest to him. "You push down, it goes, you let off, it starts to slow, that's easy."

This thread was informative to me... I had no idea other EV's did not have the same "blended braking" approach option with 2 pedal drive. That said, as someone who never drove an EV before buying my lightning I turned on 1-pedal within miles of having it and it's been my default since. My wife drives the truck occasionally and she seems to have adapted fine to 1-pedal as well.

That said it is great for more traditional drivers to have the traditional option as well.

For me, I do not like the intermediate "out of control" feeling of coasting in 2-pedal. I either want to be modulating speed or immediately slowing down when I leave my foot of the accelerator. I do not see the benefit of an intermediate method of speed control. I can go days without touching brake pedal.

I will agree with one of the other posts I saw though. The one thing I am not nuts about, is when I kill cruise and get that degen jolt before finding the equivalent acceleration pedal position.

Tesla does blend brakes now, keeps the braking consistent regardless of SOC. Implemented a year or so back.

One key item is that although this wasn't available at launch - at least Tesla can and will update SW with confidence and they respond quickly to consumer requests or recalls, typically fixed via a push before the "recall" is even in the news.

We are 18 months in with Ford trying to update BC. I don't anticipate they will ever really pull this off.

These are all learned behaviors. Cruise has behaved the same way when disengaging since its inception. If you aren't on the accelerator the vehicle will noticably slow down and has for over 40+ years now. You had to be prepared then and you have to be prepared now. The slow down is just more significant now. We can and do adapt.

Yeah, it's too bad the tech is so far behind on the Lightning. One thing I miss from my Tesla MYP is the constant, feature laden updates. Actual changes not "your speakers are better now" or "if we ever update updates will be smoother now" or "percentage on dash!" changes.

The blended braking was a new feature at the end of my Tesla ownership, I always left it off. After driving the Lightning (I use 1 pedal exclusively now) I've grown to like the blended method used by Ford. Can't say how it compares to Tesla's version as I never tried it.

Are you saying 1 pedal is clearly better? Sorry, but that's an opinion. Drive style is a preference. I've heard many stories about accidents that where at least in part influenced by the use of 1 pedal. I don't believe it is better or worse, it's just a different way to drive. I tried it, I don't like it. My brain just isn't wired for it I guess. I get just as good efficiency with 2 pedal so I'm a happy camper. At 30k miles my life time shows 2.5 mpk. My commute is 2.8 mpk. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.
