I'll be receiving my demo Lightning Pro in January and want to avoid using the bed, a hitch rack or tailgate pad when moving one mountain bike. Has anyone tried to fit a MTB in your frunk? I'm hoping the frame will fit when both wheels are taken off. If your bike fits, share some pictures. Thanks!

I highly doubt it’ll fit without taking the handlebars off and probably the fork too. You could fit one in the backseat with the front tire off though.

No. Short of rigging up a fork mount between the forward box link brackets, I think the best quick use answer is the tailgate pad

Frame and fork will not fit in the Frunk Assembled. Unless your looking to pull the fork, the bed or back seat is your solution.

For one bike, the back seat is the best answer. Put the seats up, pull the front wheel and the bike (XL Full suspension frame with 142/150 travel) slide right in, but is tight from door to door. Two bike should fit if you put them in from both sides. This is why I have owned a super duty for the last 12 years. With the Lighting two of us can put gear in the funk, bikes in the back seat, and not worry about items in the bed during the trip.

In the bed, I'm able to lay the bike down on the handle bar end and pedal. The tires hit the bed sides and tailgate to limit movement when traveling. Scratches occur in the bed and the touch points on the bike but all of them get scratched anyway... if you use the right.

If you care about your fork and possible frame damage (Carbon in particular) don't put your bike over the tailgate. The width of the gate makes it hit your bike on the fork stanchions and on the down tube where it starts to get thin. Even with a tailgate pad I have seen several carbon frame cracked at this point and warranty claims denied.

If you need to travel with more than one bike look at Latchitrack.com. It allows you to support bikes with your tailgate down. The support hits your bike at it's strongest point, the head tube. You'll still have rubbing issues, but not the damage of the wide tailgate. It's easy to install, lite to handle, and I have had up to 8 bikes on it driving across town with no issues. One word of caution: The tailgate will bounce dramatically with the bikes on it.. Slow down for big bumps or washes. I'm looking to add a 3rd arm that locks the tailgate down with the rack installed, but my riding season just started so it may be a while.

I made am upright rack for the bed. I can fit two bikes at a time with this setup with the tailgate closed. Either two fatbike or two regular MTBs. I haven't tried with a longer wheelbase bike (I'm 5'4" so size small). I had a similar setup in my Tacoma that required the tailgate to be down. With the lightning the bikes are angled. I always have a quad fold hard tonneau on the lightning that folds up thereby taking a few inches from t by e bed. The bed camera is high enough to monitor the bikes in the bed. I am not a fan of road spray getting all over the bikes and the dog gets the back seat. You would never know that the bike rack is there with the cover closed.
