I expect to take delivery of my 2022 F150, Platinum Powerboost within the next week or so. Before I leave the dealership, they are installing a RetraxProXR, a Bed Rug, and a leveling kit.

Originally I was so impressed with this install by C&H Auto, especially the cut outs and work surface, that I gave the video to the dealership for my install. Recently on this forum, I saw someone just installed the Bed Rug over the tailgate work surface.

What would you do? Install bed rug over top of work surface? or install tailgate work surface over the bed rug? Advantages/Disadvantages?

Thanks.

I put my bedrug over the work surface. Doing so is the best of both worlds.

Putting the work surface over the bedrug eliminates the ability to have a soft surface. Putting the bedrug over the work surface doesn't eliminate access to the work surface if needed, the bedrug is only held by velcro. It easily folds out of the way.

Best of both worlds - I didn't think of that. Would you wear out the velcro? Then again, who am I kidding...my truck bed is going to be more of a large trunk than a working bed.

I installed my Bedrug XLT over the work surface. It's held by Velcro so it's easy to fold out of the way, but in reality, not sure I will ever use the work surface much.

Remove the work surface, place the bedrug underneath, then reinstall the work surface. Here is a link to a guy who did it.

Whats the point? You can get the rug without the tailgate portion if I recall. OR with the separate tailgate piece instead of total one piece. That sounds like installing carpet in your home and covering it with hardwood.

My bed rug was one piece with a hinge joint covering the gap between the bed and tailgate. I like it and I didn't care that it covered the work surface.

I don't have the work surface on my tailgate, but I would probably go under the work surface if I did. One of the things I love about the bedrug is that it provides a seal between the tailgate and the bed, coupled with a tonneau cover, it keeps the bed dry/clean. When I installed my bedrug, I removed all the boxlinks and bed lighting, installed the bedrug, and then reinstalled that stuff over the bedrug, which to me, make it look factory installed.

I wanted to do that, but already had a backache so put it off till a nice cool spring day. Just made the cutouts and installed over it. Was it a biotch to get all the lights and hooks off? I want to remove the generator panel as well. Someone else did it here and it looked great.

The boxlinks were a piece of cake to remove and reinstall over the bedrug (4 Torx scews per), I used a scratch awl to poke the holes through the bedrug for the screws for reinstallation. The lights were a bit of a pain, I trimmed the foam backing of the bedrug with a razor so that they would snap back in place and look flush.

Yea, everything except the work surface needs popped out and trimmed around then reinstalled. Having the rug under the work surface just doesn't do it for me. As for velcro wearing out or coming unstuck, no problem, it is cheap to replace.

I was on the fence about this when I got my bed rug. Ended up installing under the work surface. Never regretted it.

I went under.. Advice on going under is to mark and cut the holes a bit to allow the screws to "slide in" as you tighten down the work surface. I didn't and the edges pull away from the velcro and turn up.. I'll probably go back and fix this but it's not a big deal
