Crew Cab & Dog Fur

Hi All,
My new crew cab is (hopefully) arriving soon. I’m coming from a Supercab and excited for the flat floor.

I’ve got a 3 year old furry German Shepherd. My current thinking is I’ll leave the rear seats folded up most of the time to help control fur.

Any fellow dog owners have suggestions on protecting the back of the front seats and edges of the folded up rear seats? It might be a lost cause but I want to at least try and keep the new truck clean.

My bud here and I recently went 5000 miles in a setup like you describe.

My technique was seats up, WeatherTech mat over the carpets, wet wipes for the nose prints on the trim pieces, and a Dyson stick vacuum. If you connect the spinning head thing straight onto the vacuum gun part, it’s amazing at pulling all the fur off the underside of the rear seats, back of the front seats, and mat. Those skinny plastic attachment heads get into the nooks too, like the storage bin under the back seats. I was able to restore it to fur-free many times during my trip. This includes copious amounts of that needle fur. The kind that will pierce the sole of your foot sometimes like a splinter. Nasty stuff to get embedded into the carpets, but that vacuum pulls it right out.

This is what I use. It covers front and back seats and has mesh in the middle to allow for air flow from the center console vents. It also has zippers to allow you to use the single seat of the rear bench if needed. Very happy with it.

This is what I used in my Canyon and it worked great. My solution for my platinum is to take them in my wife's Jeep

I used one of those in my fifteen supercab as well. 2 actually, first one was ate. I also made a divider out of 3/4 inch pvc pipe that attached to the front headrests and kept my two boxers where they belonged. Otherwise they would just jump over the hammock.

I think people thought I was a cop coming up behind them because the pvc did look like something you'd see in a cop car. I painted it black. They never did figure out they could have ate through it in minutes.

I’ve got a 90 lb great pyrenees/golden retriever mix. The 4knines system rocks. I keep the seats folded up and strap that hammock in. He doesn’t try to get into the front of the cab, and it keep his fur in the back. Also added a door guard for better coverage. I’m very happy with the system.

Shedding, or lack of, was the number one factor in picking out my dog. He's a doodle and the only way you know he's been in the vehicle is nose prints on the glass.

Got this XL dog seat cover, and car door protectors. Then wrapped my back seat in a queen size bed sheet. Works really well. The seat covers zip everything up all the way around and is big enough for the truck. The sheet keeps excess hair from getting on the seats.

In my Canyon I would open all four doors and blow the husky hair (we have two) out of the cab with my leaf blower, worked really well.

Big detail shop a bit north of me has a $40 "pet hair removal" service. They pull your truck in and a half dozen guys converge on the vehicle. They use combs and brushes all through the interior, combing and brushing every bit of hair or dust into their vacuum nozzles. The move the seats to the maximum travel in all directions so they can access every inch of the interior. They reach back in all the vents with pipe-cleaner type extensions on their vacuum nozzles to knock loose and suck up anything there is. They use tiny artist type paint brushes to flick out any dust in every crack of the dash and door panels directly into the vacuum nozzles.

My 2015 I just traded off had 183000 miles on it. The engine stats showed 4977 total hours on the engine, 878 hours of that (over 17%) was spent at idle. The reason for all the idle time was to provide heat or air conditioning for my Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier that goes everywhere I go. I do service work all over my state and my dog goes with me. The interior looked new after the above service. It took them about a half hour to do my 2015 supercab.

I agree with everyone that those dog hammocks are really awesome for keeping nail damage to the trim to a minimum. I've used those too, and like them. However, that one time I open a window at speed and WHOOSH, a cloud of dog fur goes everywhere (which is why I've been going with the vacuum approach). I've considered wrapping the dog in cling wrap instead.
