Thinking about western US camping. What are the best ideas for a camper shell (topper, cap) and camping equipment to carry for short/long camping trips? $3000?
Shells seem to be less than 200# vs. getting a heavy slide in camper or pulling a trailer. Secure enough?
Drop down front window in shell to allow cleaning? Sliding front window as well?
Seems a few things will be different with having 120Vac available, especially in the bed. Most camper shells offer 12Vdc top lighting, but with at least the XLT 312A option list the bed has LED lighting & power outlets, so no need for shell lighting? How is the top rear brake light powered? What kind of roof rack to use if getting long items from the hardware periodically? Do not want to cause any extra air blockage otherwise.
Is a Topper EZ Lift ( $1,370 ) a worthwhile option, with the built-in tents (+~$1000) or make own skirt to fill gap when top raised? Will they go 120Vac for their lifts?
I like the idea of the power tailgate able to come up while inside the shell. Wonder if any camper shells offer a power rear window?
Six-foot me will fit a 2-4" foam pad inside, corner to corner, to sleep with the tailgate closed, I think. Side windows for camper will need screened windows for ventilation. Think I will get a bedrug for washable padding in the bed (which one?). Any added insulation worthwhile inside the shell and bed? Any racks inside to keep things in place? I will be carrying a large 11-12" telescope with accessories as well. What tie downs to use to prevent items from flying up from rough roads?
edit: will a camper shell window in the front allow the bed camera at the back of the cab to see the bed still?
Here is a list of other 120Vac & other non-shell items I was thinking of:
-Refrigerator, freezer: are there a good small ones? Option instead of carrying ice. -Microwave! No gas stove for me. -Vacuum, small or is a broom enough? -Lights for inside and out at picnic table, but why? Water/wash (Helio LX foot pump pressured) w/ shower mini tent. -Heater vs. Electric blanket! -Solar panels (for what?) Lay flat on roof? -Fan, or Air conditioning (ZERO BREEZE Mark 2, $1,699)! -Leveling ramps. -Camper window shades. -Laptop, of course. -TV? not likely, but maybe for a non-camping event. -Bear spray. -Fire extinguisher (lithium rated? Ha-ha!). -Bumper dumper! -Electric bicycle! What kW draw is that for mountain type bike?
Hmm, will KOA-type RV campsites allow EV's to plug-in to charge overnight 30A, 240Vac? I would think that would be quite a load on a camp system not designed for it.
Your thoughts will be welcome for someone like me who has not been camping for a while. Website references with lists would be good too.
