This was our first tractor on the farm, a new 1949 Ford 8N. Five generations have learned to drive on this machine. This was the pivotal machine that transitioned us from farming with horses. Now parked next to my 2023 Lightning, the next pivotal change from combustion engines to electric power. I hope the Lightning still runs as good 74 years from now, but somehow I don't think it will.

Nice! My Dad worked at a small construction company with a concrete batch plant. They used the same tractor with a hydraulic bucket fitted to the front to load sand and gravel onto a bucket elevator for overhead storage. I had to drive the tractor a few miles across town about 1970. The steering gear was so worn out I could barely hold it in the road. I had to either accelerate or brake to keep it sort of straight in the road. A steady cruise speed would cause the front end to violently shake, and the tractor would uncontrollably veer left and right across the road.

It is funny you say that. I had the same experience as a very young man hauling a load of hay down the road in the 70s. Fast forward almost 50 years and I finally have a replacement gearbox and other steering parts to fix it this winter. I found I could hold the steering arms with my feet and keep it somewhat stable on the road
