F-150 Lightning Goes Off-Road with Switchgear Demonstrator

It’s electric and features 37-inch tires, the F-150 Lightning Switchgear from Ford Performance is a high performance on- and off-road demonstrator vehicle based on America’s best-selling electric truck.1

Designed and built in collaboration with RTR Vehicles and inspired by the F-150 RTR Ultimate Fun-Haver project vehicle from 2016, we designed F-150 Lightning Switchgear’s custom exterior carbon bodywork with a Ford Performance 2024 livery and underpinned it with off-road upgrades to take F-150 Lightning where it’s never been.

It’s the latest in our Ford Performance Demonstrator program – joining SuperVan 4.0 and 4.2, the Mustang Mach-E 1400, Mustang CobraJet 1400 and the F-100 Eluminator – that showcases the possibilities of what an electric vehicle can be and provides a playground for engineers to advance learnings quickly for future electric vehicles.

Switchgear specifically provides a testbed for pushing the boundaries of what’s expected from electric trucks.

It has a significant increase in track width beyond F-150 Lightning for off-road stability, and improved ground clearance and suspension travel. To manage rough terrain, the suspension on F-150 Lightning Switchgear – named not just for its off-road capability, but its performance on asphalt (more on that later) – uses FOX 3-inch diameter internal bypass shock absorbers plus unique front and rear bumpers to improve approach and departure angles.

The truck features custom independent double-wishbone suspension at the front, and multilink independent suspension at the rear with coil-over shocks, stabilizer bar and custom control arms.

Switchgear also has carbon composite front fenders, bed sides and rear bumper cover. Steel fabricated rock rails and front skid plate are added to ensure the vehicle is prepared for rough off-road terrain. Limit straps are added to help manage suspension and wheel travel.

The electric truck wears NITTO Ridge Grappler 37x12.5R18 tires and features a unique chase rack with two spare wheels/tires.

F-150 Lightning Switchgear can be seen by the public for the first time at the grueling King of the Hammers off-road racing event starting Jan. 25 in Johnson Valley, California.

Going to be interesting if the new truck has the Raptor style grille that a few of us picked up last month, and it was actually the Chinese manufacturer leaking the OEM part early/selling them outside the OEM arrangement

I'm going to be pissed if they dont sell any of these parts. Im assuming this won't be a production vehicle unfortunately.

Your Truck looks great with that grill.

I really wanted a Shelby type, lowered. Excited to see what they bring out.

Thanks! Lowered doesn't meet my needs most of the time, but air suspension would be nice... I think this will be a limited-production run to bring a more 'halo' product to the lineup than Platinum (and F also must see the profit potential in a $120k+ version when people are paying that and then some for a Raptor R...) They do make lowering kits for these but not something I've looked into so I can't recommend any. I agree and hope they sell parts as well, because I like my truck and am not really looking to get into something else this soon (just over 8k miles on mine) but would continue the mod train...

The power level seems to be the same as the more powerful lightning setup we currently have. But it's almost certainly had significant chassis and suspension changes done to it based on them jumping it with no issues.

I will say this, this is a badass look. I don't usually go for the lifted truck with big off-road tires thing, but the stance and body kit on this is aces.

BTW, Didn't know there was a Ford Performance Tonneau Cover, interesting.

Also, has a 20x9 +35 wheel which is close to stock specs. hmmmmm
