@Jplus_Mike one suggestion for you. If you could modify the software to allow a 30A setting we could use it with the ProPower in the bed to charge another EV. The Ford mobile unit is a 30A unit but with the J+ you would have to charge at 24A to avoid blowing the breaker. I just had a conversation with another owner today looking for a mobile EVSE with a 30A option.
Thanks for the feedback @carys98. As @lancersrock said, the settings are the way they are due to the 80% load caps on the breaker. This is a safety mechanism to prevent fires etc, and it's required as part of the UL standards we are certified against. I'm sure you would be able to find some of the cheaper Amazon chargers to do what you want, but it's not advisable.

You don't want to run it at 30 amps on a 30 amp breaker. There's a 20% over head requirement, so max load for a 30 amp breaker is 24 amps, for a 40 amp breaker it's 32 amps. Im not an expert but I imagine this is why most chargers are 16a, 24a, 32a, and 40a.
That’s true for a residential breaker but Ford specifically had Webasto modify the mobile EVSE that Ford sells with the LIghtning to operate at the full 30A. The truck is designed to run the ProPower at 30A indefinitely.

It has an interesting light show when it is charging but I have not figured out how to turn it off. That can get annoying depending on where you plug it in.
Looks like something a tube sock would cover if you cut the toe out ;-)

I have this charger and really like it. A bit of caution if you decide get one, on the first day of use connecting the ac adaptor plug, or rather I thought it was connected and plugged it into the wall. The cord came disconnected and the heavy unit dropped on the ground and bent the slide connector. It is hard to know if it’s engaged properly so watch out. This part is rather fragile.

This works. I've tried it to charge my wife's MME for about 10 minutes, but it seems the Onboard Pro Power holds the 30A with no problem. I confirm it will NOT run on most 30A residential breakers - especially the older thermal breakers. 40A breaker required.

That i did not know! I still think most OEM chargers are going to stay within the confines of the UL standards, Using the ford plug to charge another ev is a very unique and specific case that I dont think most chargers will consider. I cant imagine the headache when people say "well the breaker is 30 amp so i set my charger to 30 amp and the damn thing is junk, kept tripping my breakers".

Simply adding a 30A setting would not violate any UL spec as long as it is specified for use on a 40A circuit. The fact that the Lightning is a special use case where we can use it on a 30A circuit is the user’s decision. At one time I thought it would be useful to have an adjustable mobile unit but in the 18 months I’ve had the truck I haven’t found one case where I needed it. If I ever need to replace the Ford one I want one that will operate at 30A.

I have done low tech solutions but those lights have more important functions and using them for stupid stuff may reduce their life span unnecessarily.

Forgot to add; in Nov 22, I paid $600 for it. So with inflation, current price may be OK.
The current price, with the 10% off coupon code, will get you to roughly the same $600 for the 25ft version of the BOOSTER 2.

I have this and love it. Cord is very manageable. The unit has been dependable and feels well built. The most important part of it is the adjustable output that has made it the go to charger for me.

It has an interesting light show when it is charging but I have not figured out how to turn it off. That can get annoying depending on where you plug it in.

There is a way to turn those lights off. The text is buried in the user manual, here's the instructions:

You can enable DARK mode by following these steps:
  1. Ensure the device is plugged in and in a ready state.
  2. Press and hold the SELECT button for about 5 seconds. This action is necessary before plugging the vehicle-end connector into the vehicle charging socket or within the first 30 seconds after plugging it in.
  3. Wait for all LEDs to briefly flash yellow which indicates that the device is in the mode selection setting.
  4. Press the SELECT button repeatedly until the DARK mode is selected. In DARK mode, the LED lights will turn off after 30 seconds to minimize light emission from the device. The lights can be reactivated by pressing the SELECT button again. In case of a fault, the device will turn the LEDs back on automatically.

Hey @62F1004x4,

Feel free to reach out to me privately about this. That shouldn't happen, they have locking connectors that should click to lock when engaged. If that's not happening, we can probably handle it as a warranty replacement.

Mine does lock securely but you have to listen for the click and pull it to make sure it is locked before plugging in. Mine does not have a permanent spot so after a few times, I got a feel for it.

OK understood. Yes, the first couple times can be a tougher fit in part due to the waterproofing needed on the connector fittings for the IP67 rating.
I'm glad you've got it figured out. We have a 2 year warrantee on the BOOSTER 2 and all accessories, so if you have any issue at all, we will work with you to make it right.

Ford could come out with more plug options as well I would think as mobile cord will already do 120V or 240V.
Ford's charger is just a re-labeled Webasto Go. If you search for that you might find there are other plug options out there.

I've been thinking of getting one like this with the adjustable rate, but didn't want a generic one off Amazon that will melt. Yours rates well on State of Charge, so I just ordered one off your ebay store. Now I need to sell my 2 Ford mobile chargers which should make the cost almost net zero.
