2021 F150 - Substituting / Replacing OE spare tire

I am looking to place an order for 2021 F150 Platinum, 701A, FX4 in 1-3 months. On the build sheet from the configurator, it shows

• 275/60 R20 BSW All-Terrain Tires as the OE tires on the vehicle
• 265/70/18 A/T as the spare tire on the vehicle

With primary use as a tow vehicle, I wish to have the same size spare as the OE tires. I understand that there is no option to do so with Ford itself and this is upto me to resolve it. Buying is easy but the hassle of trying to sell the OE spare is not a chore that I find amusing.

What are some of the strategies that people use for this purpose? Any advice would be appreciated.

With these sizes, the primary wheel/tire total diameter measures 32.99" and the spare is 32.61". While I wouldn't run it in 4A with the spare on, because equal tire sizes are critical in AWD, but I think Ford has specd out a small enough difference to not have o worry about the difference in 2 Hi. Unless you are going to buy a 5th wheel to match your other 4 and start rotating all 5, replacing the spare seems unnecessary.

We are buying the truck to pull a 5th wheel camping trailer, albeit a smaller and lighter one to fit within the payload. I am aware that the diameter of the OE spare is close but I don't want to have the worry about the spare when we have a flat while towing. I have discussed this point with other owners in owner group of the trailer I am buying - and there is a fair consensus on it. We do indeed plan a 5 wheel rotation.

My question is to figure out the best way to make this substitution. Like anyone, I don't want to blow a lot of money. But, selling tires isn't exactly my forte either and I don't want a lot of headache either. And, I wouldn't mind the OE wheel - to do the 5 wheel rotation.

Personally, I would not worry about this too much.
Load rating on the 18” wheel is probably better than the 20”
I doubt you would be driving like you were in a sports car while towing, so handling should not change that much.
I think that perhaps the biggest issue would be to find a 20” wheel that you can leave under the truck and not concern yourself with it rotting away.
Or, you can hang out a few months til one gets cracked up and ends up in a graveyard.
Perhaps you could get a single wheel then

I like Michelin tires and have swapped my new truck tires for Michelin's the day the truck arrived. They gave me very good credit towards the new tires. I end up paying around $225 more to the tire store because the Michelin's are more and having them mounted and balanced.

Check with some tire stores in your area and see if they will do that with your bran new spare tire and see if they will give you a credit on your 18" for a new 20".

I would then check junk yards or aftermarket wheels that match your wheel. You could order a new Ford wheel but I bet that will be very pricey.

I like Michelin tires and have swapped my new truck tires for Michelin's the day the truck arrived. They gave me very good credit towards the new tires. I end up paying around $225 more to the tire store because the Michelin's are more and having them mounted and balanced.

Check with some tire stores in your area and see if they will do that with your bran new spare tire and see if they will give you a credit on your 18" for a new 20".

Probably but I would still give them a shot. If they don't they may know who does.

I tried to do this with my Ford dealer but they told me they can't take tires off and sell them as new. I said the truck has 5 miles on it and Ford put the tires on it. Still didn't work so I checked with the local tire store, he said no problem.

I just got my 2021 Ford F150 XLT (ordered it) It has 20" tires on it and it came with a 17" spare.
I complained enough that the dealer is supposed to be getting me a 20" rim and tire.
I should have it this week.
The problem (the dealer says) is that the 20" tire will NOT fit under my truck.
(I think this is a bad design)
But at least I will have a 20" tire if I have a flat (to replace it)
I will give an update when I receive the tire and rim

What Michelin's did you go with? I thought about going with the Defenders.

Another vote for the Michelin Defenders. Did the same thing as Bob and swapped them out on day 1. Have almost 5K on them and they are an awesome tire, both dry and wet pavement.

The Defenders and as stated by Bravo36, they have been an awesome tire. Well worth the extra money and are really quite.

Just an update
The dealer finally got me the right size rim and tire for my spare.
They even gave me the rim that matches my truck.
I just complained enough until they did. I guess the squeaky wheel does get the oil.
