Hey guys and gals,

New to Ford, trucks, USA and forums! Just looking for some steer on home lvl 2 chargers. Currently eyeing up the new Emporia Pro lv2, curious as to whether anyone has this or the previous standard model, and their thoughts.

Also, interested to hear if anyone has home solar and is utilizing their excess solar production to charge the truck (and how) - and vice versa, to power their home from the truck in any one of the numerous power outages that you guys get here in this magnificent adoptive country of mine 🇺🇸.

Apologies in advance of any bad forum etiquette 🙇‍♀️

Welcome!

Lots of good reading here on solar and Emporia chargers. Best to use the search function.

I have a basic Emporia and it is great, along with it's software.

Have the standard version. Works great. Good software and scheduling and reporting. One of the better values in chargers IMO and one I install frequently

Welcome

Standard Emporia user here and it's been great.

I wonder of Tom has a video of this on his State of Charge youtube channel.

FWIW, I wish I had gotten the plugin emporia instead of the hardwired one. It would have been cheaper and easier to install. Other than that, it’s been great.

Welcome to the forum, and the USA!

Another vote here for the standard Emporia EVSE.

We use excess solar to charge, but it's all manual. Between two different vendors of solar hardware and a third vendor (Emporia) for the charger, it looks like a headache for me to automate this. And I'm kinda lazy. My advice would be to try to combine all of it into a single "package" at installation if you can, and get a few more panels than you think you really need. For many reasons, I'd also suggest a battery (mine's 10 kW and I wish I had another one).

Power the house from the truck? Oooohhh, that's a third-rail topic around here... as suggested above, search a bit and you will find too many posts for anyone to really read. I use a manual transfer switch with a whip that plugs into the 240V outlet on the truck. Bob's your uncle. YMMV.

:)

Another Emporia standard user here with the Vue Gen 2 monitoring. Very satisfied, and the Excess Solar mode is my daily routine. Yes, there is a bit of manual backing-and-forthing required but I'm hopeful that Emporia will make it more user-friendly going forward. They do seem to update the software fairly regularly.

I've had the emporia lvl 2 charger for about a year mounted to the outside of my house and its been excellent. It still looks brand new and I've never had an issue with it. The app is also pretty useful. Highly recommend this lvl 2 charger!

Appreciate the warm welcomes and good info, guys. Helpful!

Solar array already installed and operational, so past the stage of 'bundling', already. The Emporia seems to have a solid (satisfied) customer base, so will look at the new Pro version a little more. Not great with the technical speak, but I know someone who can decipher for me!

Loving the Lightning and trucks in general, have absolutely no need for one 🤣 - or haven't so far - but you guys do things a little differently round these parts, so no doubt I'll be hauling something sometime!

How do you figure it would have been cheaper to install the plug-in version? It would require a GFCI breaker for code compliance (~$100) and an industrial/EV rated 14-50 receptacle for safety ($50-75). Hard wiring doesn't require either of these, so should be less expensive.

I could be wrong. My house was pre-wired to the wall box for an EV charger. It took two trips and a lot more time to install the charger and only one to install the EV charger socket (on the other wall, future use).

Have a standard (not Pro) plug-in Emporia EVSE which I bought about 18 months ago based on reading many recommendations from this forum. I bought the plug in because I can use it as a mobile charger in two or more places. You can pick multiple charge rates based on the wiring set up where you are. I also use it to take advantage of time of use (TOU) charges and use FordPass to control the target charge. It does need Wifi access to use this timing feature and to change the charge rate. Works flawlessly. Highly recommend.
