Floor Mat Retainer Clip for Vinyl Floor

So, my base model Pro came with a vinyl floor and regular Ford floor mats wouldn't fit. The truck is not equipped with the retainer posts that snap into OEM mats. Ford sells the factory retainer clip, the part number is W715120-SSA. However, the installation requires that you cut 2 slots in the floor liner to feed the clip portion through. I wasn't enthusiastic about cutting holes in the vinyl, and came up with a Plan B.

Instead I trimmed the clips off the mat retainers with an oscillating saw, and used some 3M VHB (very heavy bond) mounting tape specifically designed for vinyl adhesion to stick the posts down. It turns out that surface prep is essential, time will tell how the adhesive holds up.

That tape is amazing, and you're not going to have a problem.

But you may as well have cut the holes, because there's no way you're getting it off!

As it turns out, the tape didn't hold up. Bought a set of Ford All Weather mats instead, and the molded shape holds them in place fairly well without clips.

Thanks for the part number for the clips. I'm ok with cutting the holes... are there instructions somewhere for that? It's not clear to me where exactly to cut and how big since it has 2 posts.

In the future try ShoeGoo. Sticks pretty much to anything and you can usually separate it from wherever it’s attached with dental floss by working it under one edge and sawing through the joint.
