I changed my well-worn, stock Hankook “AT” tires at 26,000 miles. They had the same outside edge wear that everyone here complains about. I thought I could make it through the winter, but decided our lives were worth more than trying to extend the life out of an unsafe tire. As everyone here knows—or will know, finding a replacement tire is not easy. Especially if you’re in a snowy climate and don’t want to run snow tires. AT tires seem like the obvious choice, but when you factor in the range loss, potential noise, and cost—it starts to seem like highway all-seasons make for a slightly better choice. After much hand-ringing, I went with the General Grabbers in 116T and within the first week of ownership I’ve driven them 400 miles on the highway, on 1” thick ice-covered backroads of the Adirondack’s, fresh snow, and torrential downpours. I can say with 100% certainty these blow away the stock Hankook AT tires. The Hankooks are junk. They have—since they were new—dangerously hydroplaned on surfaces you wouldn’t expect. They are pathetic in snow. And 3 times this past winter my truck slid down a snow-covered incline in park. And all 3 times I came out to find it 10-15 feet from where I parked it! In my 45 years of driving. This has never happened to me. Anyway, for those of you out there who are having a hard time deciding what to get, I’m here to say I’m very pleased with the Generals. And they are an absolute bargain compared to other tires out there.

Tire pressure too low. Regardless of what the door sticker says. The grabbers wore evenly at 42 psi. The grabbers were great the first winter, second winter I went with falken wildpeaks.

I've heard great things about these Falken. Wish I had had the backbone to go that route, but I whipped out in favor of a "safer" lower road-resistance Michelins LTX.

I’ve had the Hankook Dynapro AT2s on another truck and their Dynapro AS on my Expedition. Both were terrible, even dangerous. Got rid of them early on both vehicles. My Lightning came with the General Grabbers. The Grabbers are decent, actually handle snow and wet very well, but are worthless for slush and ice. They’re not good on dirt. But I’ve kept them on now for a bit over 2 years. I’ll be replacing them before next winter as it will be about time anyway. Definitely want to go with something a bit more aggressive or winter-capable, just not sure which tires as of yet. Can’t really afford to sacrifice any range… Maybe just a tiny bit is all.

Falken Wildpeak AT3’s are excellent all-around light AT tires. They handle everything but ice and if it’s that bad you either stay home or cable up. Have and did have the Wildpeaks on two Bronco Sports, a 4Runner and a Ranger. Have not looked to see if they make any suitable for the Lightning, but I will stick with the Wildpeaks on the Bronco Sports and Ranger we currently have when the time comes to change.
