The free ride couldn't last forever (and ended in recent years in other states already). I think It's only fair to pay some additional registration fee since EV's aren't paying road taxes otherwise. Gas tax in NJ is 42.3 cents/gallon (state) plus 18.4 cents/gallon (federal) = 60.7 cents per gallon. So, if you drive 12k miles in a car that gets 25 MPG, you would pay $$291.36 (480 gallons x $0.607). You do get screwed though if you only drive a few thousand miles a year.

I get that, and I agree with what you are saying. However like you said you get screwed over if you drive less. I don't drive 12K per year, nor does my wife. So we are going to have to start paying in 2025 and 2026 when the registration needs to be renewed.

Ultimately someone gets screwed and someone gets a free ride. Now, out-of-state EV drivers disproportionately win.

The burden of the free ride now goes to people who fuel in NJ and those EV drivers with a NJ registration. Out-of-state EV drivers don’t share any of the burden.

It gets better now...

Now the NJ sales tax freeze on EVs has been lifted. So if you want to buy an EV, you better do so before October in order not to have any car sales tax.
