I have a blend date of 7/27 so I will hopefully be receiving my truck in the next couple of months here in Half Moon Bay, CA. Lariat ER, Carbonized Grey Metallic. I really want to put a bed cap on it so I can secure toys such as mountain bikes and surfboards inside as I have done with all my past trucks. Just curious if anyone has installed a leer or snug top cap on their truck yet and if there were any complications with the installer and if this will effect the range at all? I think the bed caps weight around 170 - 190 LBS. Pictures would be cool as well.

Getting my Century (made by Leer) cap installed this Friday. I'll post photos. The installer said that there have only been three installed in the US by Century so far- he was a little unsure about wiring the brake light in the cap. I was looking on here for information but didn't find any.

Remember to get a DMV change of vessel from commercial to automobile when you install the cap.

Will save you a lot of registration costs!

Say what? Why would putting a cap on a pickup allow you to change to a non-commercial registration? I've been driving pickups in California for 40 years and that's a new one on me. And I'm old enough to remember when for a short time, California was requiring commercial registration on station wagons and were ruthlessly enforcing it on moms who picked up groceries at the store and loaded them into a station wagon if they did not have commercial registration. Fortunately that did not last long.

Two things abut that largely means that a cap (not a camper) does not meet the requirement to be registered as a non-commercial vehicle. First is a cap or shell does not have the camping requirements to meet the definition, and if you EVER take the shell off, it must be registered as a commercial vehicle. I do take my shell of at least a couple times a year.

I never take my cap off. It seems the savings of weight fees might be worth changing the registration. I do have an inflatable bed for it. And the outlets support electric stoves for camping. Ergo I contend this meets the spirit of the definition. If toilet and kitchen sink are required I guess that’s a no however.
