All of this is pure speculation and the wording within the article says one thing but everyone wants to say something other. Ford let all of us believe we could get a 40k truck but really had no intention taking care of their customer.

I think youā€™re speaking of the private iffer

RDR, what about the statement within the article that "while a 3rd wave of invitations will follow in Mid-September for all other unconverted reservation holders". Those of us holding reservations shouldn't we be consider "unconverted" ?
regardless of what the article says, I think the Ford info release to dealers makes it clear the offer extends to either (1) people with reservations already converted to orders, or (2) people who were extended the opportunity to order but deferred that offer awaiting the desired trim. Collectively, those people reduce to being people with actual orders at the prior price (or who could have had orders but for Ford making their trim unavailable at time of order).
which makes some sense, from the perspective that Ford is looking to onoy let people who already ordered (or could have) retain their expected order price. Otherwise, as RDR said above, it would mean Ford was extending price protection to EVERYONE who has merely registered interest in possibly, maybe, buying some version of a Lightning. Afterall, people with reservations are in no way obligated or committed to purchase anything from Ford, either.

Maybe part of the frustration, and Fordā€™s mistake, is in miss-messaging what a refundable $100 reservation entitles a person to, exactly.

That said, everyone who placed a ā€œreservationā€ had to affirmatively click-through an ā€œI agreeā€ to the following terms (quoted only in relevant part - my emphasis):

ā€œ
Reservation. You may be able to configure a Ford vehicle (the ā€œVehicleā€) through the Reservation Process (ā€œReservationā€). By completing the Reservation Process, you are not ordering or purchasing a vehicle. The Reservation Process allows you to configure a Vehicle and pay the Reservation Deposit (ā€œReservation Depositā€) to an authorized Ford or Lincoln dealer (collectively ā€œDealerā€) you select. Participation in the Program does not guarantee you vehicle delivery. You must contact a Dealer to discuss final transaction pricing, arrange any necessary financing, and complete your purchase of the Vehicle. Your Reservation does not guarantee a set price for the Vehicle. The Dealer sets the Vehicle price, which may differ from the MSRP. Unless otherwise indicated, MSRP is the manufacturer suggested retail price and does not include destination/delivery fee plus government fees and taxes, any finance charges, any dealer processing charge, any electronic filing charge, and any emission testing charge. Optional equipment not included.

Vehicle Specifications and Configuration
You understand that we may not have completed the development of the Vehicle or begun manufacturing the Vehicle at the time of your Reservation. By agreeing to these Terms, you represent and warrant to us that you understand that the Vehicle configuration may change prior to execution of a sales agreement between you and a Dealer.

No Purchase Requirement.
The Program does not require you to complete a vehicle purchase, finance, or lease contract. If you change your mind before you have entered into a contract with your Dealer, you may cancel your Reservation pursuant to Section 10 below.

Right to Decline, Cancel Reservation.
Ford, at its sole discretion, may decline or cancel your Reservation at any time, for any reason. You will be notified by email if your Reservation is declined, and your Reservation Deposit will be refunded if it has already been processed.

Right to Modify, Cancel Program.
Ford reserves the right to change, update, improve, correct, modify, suspend, discontinue or cancel all or part of the Program, including any of its features, functionalities or manners of operation at any time without any notice or obligation to you. ā€¦ā€ā€

In any event, I understand the frustration and hope Ford if nothing else delivers more Pros in MY23

I suspect that what we will see happen going into 2023 is that Ford and other EV manufacturers will have two prices for their EV vehicles - one for base range battery and one for long or extended range battery. Both MSRPs will be below the tax credit threshold, so all of their EVs will qualify for the credits. This excludes models where the base version price exceeds the maximum credit threshold, such as the Porsche Taycan or Tesla MS and MX, which will never again see a tax credit.

For the Ford Lightning as an example, we may see an extended range Lightning model MSRP, of say around $55k, with packages as options - XL, XLT, Platinum, etc. There will be a $40K Platinum package option to add to the $55k MSRP, and there will be no per se Platinum model with a $95k MSRP. The MODEL will be Lightning extended range with a MSRP below the threshold. The Platinum package will just be one of many available options. Problem solved.
