I live in an off-grid house and intend to use the 30amp plug on the back to occasionally charge my batteries during the winter months in lieu of running my gas generator.

Do you mind sharing more details about your off grid system?

That's the big question now. Charge the batteries or power a critical loads panel directly?

anybody have any tips or suggestions on which would be better and why?

dealing with the bonded neutral issue would probably be the biggest issue. The Generac manual transfer switch with critical loads panel should deal with it and I'm pretty sure there is a battery bank charger that would accept this input as well although I don't know specfic models.
