Trying to pick which tires I want for my winter set while shopping for some take-offs since anything is better than the Hankooks that I currently have. The two choices seem to be Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT or the General Grabber APT

If you're going to have dedicated wheels, why not do real winter tires?

Mostly cost and ease. Its cheaper for me to buy a set of takeoffs with tires that are better than what I currently have for the snow, vs buying just wheels (400-600) plus sensors (400+?) then tires (900-1000+) plus mount and balance (150?)

Understood.

If you're reading reviews at Tire Rack or other places, be sure the tire being reviewed is the one Ford ships. It appears they often have special runs done by manufacturers to meet their specs, which aren't always the same as the tire you'd buy from a dedicated tire place.

For sure. So what I’ve discovered is the best option for winter are the general grabber tires. They are the only OEM tire that has the three peak snowflake symbol, so that will be my choice for this season. If they aren’t good enough, I’ll swap them out for a dedicated snow tire.

Last spring, I did some online searching(kijiji) and found a set of take off Lariat aluminum wheels with sensors, and studded winter tires , all used one winter for $600. If you look in spring, there are usually quite a few people selling winter tires/rims that they just took off.

I will chime in to say that the Goodyear Wrangler AT tires that come on the 18" Sport package wheels are not exactly confidence inspiring the on snow/ice. In anticipation of this winter along with the tire shortage, I just purchased a set of OEM takeoff wheels on eBay for $644 shipped, a set of Blizzak DM-V2 tires from Amazon $796 shipped, and used my FordPass points for new TPMS sensors.

Yeah I opted to find a set of Grabber APT’s on 18’s. Great there’s a tire shortage now?! I can’t believe you got those that cheap ?

I'm going to +1 this. The stock Goodyear Wrangler AT were pretty bad in the snow. I swapped for Wrangler Duratracs and they are much better in the snow (especially deep snow they aren't great when its thin and slick/icy) but I really don't like them the rest of the year.

I'm probably going to switch in the spring to dedicated summer/winter. While the Duratracs haven't been bad in the snow, they definitely aren't great in certain conditions, and aren't nearly as confidence inspiring as Blizzaks I have run on prior cars (2010 Golf TDI, 2015 GTI, and currently on our 2017 CR-V). I also just don't like using such a beefy tire the rest of the year as the road noise and MPG hit are noticeable and they don't have a great highway ride. I actually liked the OEM Goodyear Wrangler tires on dry roads but they were terrifying in snow.

$800 18" XLT chrome take offs w/free shipping from eBay, $900 installed/balanced set of Conti VikingContact 7s on them.

I drive up to the southern White Mountains every weekend in the winter. Snows have been worth every penny for me over the years. First year with these tires. I'm usually a Nokian guy, but there are none anywhere.

Good to know the 18" Goodyears aren't great in the winter. This will be my first truck and I've always run dedicated winter tires on my cars. I was curious if I could get away with the OEM A/Ts for the first few months (anticipating Feb/Mar delivery). Looks like I'll be running dedicated winters on this as well!

That is tentatively my plan as well. I was thinking the Blizzak LT. But I've in general (pun intended) been impressed with the General Grabber APT's. I specifically upgraded to the LT tire because I wanted something better than the OEM Wranglers that comes with the normal fx4 package. Happy to find out the General Grabber APT has the 3MPSF rating.

We just got a huge dump of snow here in Manitoba and they've performed quite admirably. The temperature swings have melted snow during the day it's been freezing to ice at night on the roads. So far no issues with stopping or starting in 2 wheel drive.

I've seen some horrible reviews on the LT's (wear related) so ill be going with DM-V2's or a Hakkapeliitta tire. I'm hoping I have a similar experience as you are with the APT's
