I’ve thought about snow tires but in CO during the winter we get a lot of sun and the snow melts fast. I can only imagine what the seasonal wear on a snow tire would be on a heavy truck like the lightning. Probably not worth it.
I hear you (and you are probably right) but I plan to buy the Blizzaks.

Check out the Michelin CrossClimate2, not sure if they make a truck version yet. If they do, they're amazing tires. Truly the first "all season" that does well in the snow. Seeing a lot of people use them year round instead of dedicated winter/summer tires. They do well in heat too, wet traction is second to none. Truly a game changing tire.

Thanks for the tip. They do not make one that fits the Lightning.

Just tried to get Blizzaks from Costco, they have a 114R rating that doesn't meet the manufacturer's weight specs (116T)...X-ICE are 116T rated and go on sale the 29th, $300 more for the set. Probably not worth throwing underrated tires on the truck, seems like a liability not worth taking on in VT.

I've been flip flopping between the two...yes the X-Ice do have a higher rating, their max psi is also set at 44 and I don't know how comfortable I am with the truck demanding 42 in day to day driving.

As for the blizzaks, yes they do have a lighter rating, they have a max psi of 50...as I stated before, I'm still unsure...

damn, you are right. I was just looking at Tirerack (that is where I buy) as I had planned some Blizzaks too. the list is pretty short at tirerack with Yokohama ICEGUARD IG51V - SIZE: 275/65R18 meeting the 116T. I'm right across the border in NH and wouldn't want to deviate from 116T if that's the required specs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a 114 can still support over 10 000lbs. Seeing as the truck is around 7000lbs, you would need to put over 3000lbs of cargo for it to be a risk no?

You can't get the size from tirerack, but the continental viking contact 7 is available in 275 65 18 and is an 116xl rated tire.

True if you're going with 18's they're not recommending Blizzaks. The 20's I bought are 115 rating. (y)

Costco is pretty strict with their installations, they won't go under manufacturer's recommendation - part of their warranty, etc. They're rebates are contingent on installation. I bet you could use them if you really wanted to.

@Marcoux Your are right. The precise numvers are:
  • Weights 6,855 lbs.
  • 114T is 2,601 lbs. x 4 = 10,404 lbs. 3,549 over 6,855.
  • 115T is 2,679 lbs. x 4 = 10,716 lbs. 3,861 over 6,855.
  • 116T is 2,756 lbs. x 4 = 11,024 lbs. 4,169 over 6,855.

@Blaster Thanks for this great info. Can you advise where you found the manufacturer's sepc to be 116T? I cannot find the spec anywhere. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Costco is showing the only viable tire for a Lariat is the Blizzak DMV2 275/60 R20.

I've got 18" on the PRO, tire rack.com has all the weight specs listed as well as the manufacturer's page. Enjoy the Blizzak!

@Blaster I'm stuggling with finding where on the Tire Rack site is states what that the requirement is 116. It's probably stareing me right in the eye and I'm just not seeing it. When I go through the Rire Rack "tool" to find the right tire for my Lariat, it comes up with the Blizzak 115 (just like the Costco site does.) I'll order that tiire from Sullivan Tire (or Town Fair tire) here in Boston. Thanks so much for your help.
