Hey folks-as the title implies, I’m looking at a ‘23 Lightning. I love my KR powerboost and honestly don’t want to get rid of it but I’ve taken a new job that includes an almost daily 120 mile round trip, and the gas cost is becoming unbearable. The Lightning seems to make the most sense for what I need as I still need a truck to do weekend projects and tow a small center console boat for short distances. We’ll use my wife’s Yukon for longer trips.

Based on what I’m reading getting a ‘23 Lariat holdover is the way to go. I really like the Platinum but a $15-$20k price difference (esp since you can’t get the tax credit) more speakers and massaging seats you can’t even get right now doesn’t seem to be remotely close to worth it (correct me if I’m wrong on those being the only major differences between lariat and platinum). 0%/72 mos being offered through Labor Day is an excellent incentive, but I can’t make heads or tails of the other rebates other than the tax credit (which appears as if you can get only if MSRP before destination is <$80k). I’m seeing a lot of 511A package trucks around my area (SE GA) going for just under $80k MSRP but of course every dealer lists the price differently and doesn’t always specify what incentives/tax credit are included in the price.

My questions are, for those of you who have been buying lately, what are the actual rebates you can get for what I’m looking for (‘23 Lariat 511A) beyond the tax credit? And beyond that, after all rebates, how much lower off MSRP is common?

Am I totally out of touch with reality to try and get one for <$60k (before sales tax) with all incentives/rebates/tax credit? My thought is to just call around the week before Labor Day and see what kind of deals I can find, but perhaps plant the seed in a salesman’s mind right now.

Thanks!

I purchased my '23 Lariat back in March. Ford was offering $5,000 off, dealership was offering $7,000 off and with $7,500 EV tax credit I got out the door for $59,500 (plus a "free" mobile charger because the dealership brought in their trucks without the mobile charger on the Monroney sticker). I am up in Montana where the Lightnings have not been selling well. So I have to imagine it will be hard to get sub $60k without the Ford rebate.

But with that said, I absolutely would start to call dealerships and offer $60k out the door. Your money is rarer than the Lightning right now.

This is very encouraging, especially the part about dealer offering $7k off. Were you also able to get any kind of 0% financing? Between their varying rebate and finance offers throughout the year, I am wondering if Ford is just offering 6 in the spring and half a dozen in the summer, if you follow me-although it looks like I can get at least $2,500 in rebates right now.

To be clear I’d be fine with paying sub $60k out the door with all available rebates/discounts/tax credits, unless of course common knowledge suggests I can do better than that (i.e. if dealers are prone to offer much bigger discounts right now).

I got 1.9% financing.

What did you think of the PB? I'm waiting on my 24 King Ranch PB to get built as part of a swap for my buy back. Any regrets? I love my LER's driving characteristics, and inexpensive operation costs when I'm home but my use case is opposite of yours. I don't have a steady, standard, commute and do a lot of highway driving in areas with limited EV infrastructure.

To answer your question, w/o a Ford manufacturers rebate, I think $7,500 tax credit, and maybe a $7,000 dealer rebate may be the best unless you find that one off dealership desperate to unload the truck. Basically $65k is highly likely. I got mine in December for $7k off by Ford, $5k off by dealers (had to use their financing for three months then paid off), and I qualified to capture the full $7,500 tax credit. The Platinum doesn't qualify for the tax credit because it is based on MSRP, not sales price. Personally, I don't think the extras are worth the added expense.

You can probably find some used LER's for $50k at this point. One of the members is selling his for $48k with 20k miles.

Whatever you do, make sure you get an extended range for that commute. You'll lose 25% of that range during colder temps, and if you're traveling at highway speeds between 70-80mph for most of your driving you lose about 30%. It'll still cover your 120 mile rt if you're charging at home obviously, but the LER will give you a nice buffer. Wanted to make sure you knew this as I took the EPA range estimates for granted, and was unpleasantly surprised during my 120 mile daily round trip commute when I first purchased mine in the winter months.

I'm also interested in your take on the PowerBoost. My '22 Lariat ER with 21,000 miles is for sale on this site. Shopping for a PowerBoost.

So, three questions:

1. How do you like the PowerBoost?
2. What year is it?
3. Wanna trade?

(p.s. The Lightning is perfect for daily 120 mile use.)

My 2 cents. I bought a used 23 lariat. Retail on it was $93k?!?! It had just under 1000 miles on it and I traded in a 07 Chevy Silverado. Out the door $68k. With in the next 6 months, prices fell. Do I regret it, no. What I would recommend as I keep my vehicles for a long time. I wish I had Blue Cruise and the Extended Range battery. I originally thought it would be great for my handy man business to run up and down the hill here in Tucson. Now we take it to Phoenix at least 1x/month. I can make it round trip with out charging, but I pull in the garage with 1-3% battery left. I get the pucker factor and back down to 70mph to save battery. The Extended Range would be a nice buffer. Not expecting to buy a different vehicle, I did not know enough about the options for Ford. Blue Cruise would be nice for the trips up I-10. If you are buying new, get those things. Your 120 mile daily trip will be much more enjoyable.

Man, I absolutely love the PB, I really do. The King Ranch is such a great look both on the inside and outside. I get at least 650 miles per tank on this 120 mile commute, but if I drove just around town 10 or so miles a day like I used to I bet I could get 700+ on the reg and never have to fill it up (especially if I opt for the Livernois tune which if I don't sell it I'm definitely going to get it). It is mega fast and solid as a rock-and all of the technology is just incredible. Like the Lightning I'm sure, takes a little getting used to driving to maximize efficiency, but once you figure it out it's great. I bought it with 36k miles and now have sub 50k miles on it, and would absolutely keep it til the wheels fell off but for this 120 mile commute-and if my wife didn't have a Yukon that we could use for longer trips (towing or otherwise). It's a '21, and I have heard that later years have some issues, but for me I've had basically zero trouble. The only issue I had was the fuel door pin got pulled out of the fuel door (which you need to to keep the fuel door airtight-apparently a necessity for hybrids), which I've seen is a pretty common issue, but it was a cheap replacement part for like $30.

As far as highway driving, it's not dissimilar to the Lightning in terms of efficiency. Between 55-65 mph on the highway, even pushing 70, is where it really shines-I'd say I can get anywhere from 24-25 mpg. 70-80 mph, I'm lucky to get 20 mpg. Around town where I live, where speed limits top out at 35-45 mph, I can get close to 30. And again, if I had the Livernois tune with the e-boost, where it'll let you stay in electric mode a little longer (esp coming from a complete stop), I bet I could do really well. The EV coach really helps with this. I would say for all of these, there is a bit of a difference in the winter vs. summer, but you'd really have to be nitpicky to see a difference. And as I mentioned I'm in Southeast Georgia, where our winters are extremely mild. We may have 1 or 2 days a year where the lows are below freezing, and the coldest days outside of that are in the 40's, so who knows if that really makes a difference.

Thanks for your insight on the Lightning. Definitely plan to get the ER. I'm still a little skeptical as is if we're being honest lol, so my skepticism is going to force me to get an ER if I get the Lightning.

1 and 2-see above. Glad to answer any other questions you may have.
3. Maybe, I'd like to see what kind of offers I can get on a new '23. But I'd be interested in selling it regardless! I still have a Ford extended warranty thru 2031/125k miles (about a 4k value), which I'd have to imagine is transferable. If you're willing to come up on what a dealer would be offering me on a trade-in, I'd definitely be interested (if we didn't trade).

Send me some info on yours when you get a chance!

Rocked a killer deal on a '24 ($9,250 BEV rebates)
Absolutely zero interest in a heavily depreciated '23 leftover ~ sans heat pump

If I were you, I'd keep the Powerboost and get a cheap Bolt or Leaf, or a very used Prius to do the commute. You'd be way ahead $-wise. Trading an already expensive vehicle to buy a rapidly-depreciating EV truck is not going to offset any gas savings. That said, if you really want a Lightning, go for it!

Thanks for sharing, that’s very helpful as I haven’t read too many first hand experiences. We also have a Yukon with the Duramax for longer trips, but that’s her car and we haven’t found a comparable EV SUV for our needs. I foresee I’ll stick with the PB, and once more EV SUV options come out, we’ll swap hers out for an EV SUV as it’s better suited to her driving needs.

I’ll preempt my comment on winter driving to say I wasn’t able to precondition often during my winter ownership, so maybe that made a difference. However, my experince was that anything under 65 degrees began impacting range. With the next step down at 20-30 degress. Maybe not so much in elevated regions due to the less dense air, but definitely under 2,000ft to sea level.

Close! Looking for a three row, and sub $85k. Basically the Tahoe/Yukon EV equivalent. Rivian came close, but with three young kids we need the space for stroller plus all their stuff on trips. Honestly, a Tesla would have been nice as my wife isn't as tech savvy and Tesla is about as plug and play as it gets when it comes to charging options and software interface IMO.
