You can't just stay plugged in and charging? My understanding is that the 12 volt battery is charged when you are charging the truck, although I doubt it's getting charged at that high of a level.

There are phases during the FDRS update which disconnect the HVB contactors, then we lose the DC/DC inverter functionality, if the update is a long & power hungry the LVB might not last until the process is complete.

During an ipma update it did not last. Ask me how I know.
