Howdy

I have a 14-50 that was installed by electrician in the garage (60 amp breaker). I bought a ChargePoint Home flex. On the back of the 14-50, there is a Red, Black, White and Green (Hot 1, Hot 2, neutral and ground, respectively).

The ChargePoint has connections for Red, Black and a 3rd connection, not 4th. Is the 3rd connection point for Ground or Neutral? Does the last unused wire just not get connected at all? ChargePoint tech support was zero help (not sure if he even understood my question).

Thank you

A 14-50 receptacle should be on a maximum 50 amp breaker. The highest you can charge using the 14-50 is 40 amps.

The ChargePoint doesn't use the neutral.

Thank you
You're welcome. But I can't stress enough that the breaker you currently have is not up to code and you risk an electrical fire if you don't change it.

Thank you - the 60 amp breaker will be hard wired to the ChargePoint. … should result at 48 amps to the truck.

The 14-50 receptacle is going on the shelf.

Make sure your conductors will support the 60 amps. 6 Guage romex won't.

Please make sure your wire is capable to carry 48 amps continuously. Standard wire designed to support a 50 amp circuit for a 14-50 outlet is designed for continuous loads of 40 amps and may overheat if drawing 48 amps continuously (usually 6 AWG is used when wiring 14-50 outlets ). There are several factors like length of run, ambient temperature, etc. that make up the calculations to determine the appropriate wire characteristics. As a guide without knowing your conditions, 4 AWG should be safe for 48 amp continuous loads over a moderate length run of say 20-100ft. 6 AWG may be too light depending on the length of the wire run. 48 continuous amps across a moderate run of 6 AWG on 60 amp breaker could shorten the lifespan of the breaker and warm the wire considerably. Short runs may be ok with 6 AWG (say less than 25ft) but you will need to look at your factors and perhaps get some guidance. Personally, I wouldn't do less than 4 AWG for 48 Amps.
