As the Lightning (Lariat ER) comes in about 8,500 lbs. should I be concerned about its weight damaging my asphalt driveway - I see asphalt is rated generally good for up to 8,000 lbs.

Asphalt is rated to 8,000lbs... per what area?

8,000 lb spread evenly across a whole driveway is definitely fine, for instance.

8,000 lb in 1 square inch is, I'm sure, going to damage the asphalt.

8,500 might be the 'gross vehicle weight rating', but the Lightning only weighs in at about 6,500 - if your asphalt couldn't handle that, it also couldn't handle the propane truck, or the trash truck, or the water truck, or the Lowe's delivery truck.

I don't think it weighs that much unless it's with maxed out payload, I think it around 6500-7000lbs unloaded? edit, I was too late!

my powerboost in todays heat already is starting to print in my asphalt driveway. another ton on top of that is going to be a definite issue in the heat states.

Asphalt displacement also depends on temperature and duration, not just weight. Pulling a 15,000# truck into a driveway, unloading, and pulling back out in 40F weather will likely have less effect than parking a pickup in the same spot every day for the entire summer.

You shouldn't see any problems. The weight of the vehicle is not as important as the tire pressure. The load on your driveway (or any paved surface) is exactly equal to the air pressure in your tires. If you have 42 PSI in the tires, that is the load in PSI on the asphalt. Your driveway asphalt should be able to support at least 1200 PSI which would seem to be enough.

Asphalt is an aggregate mix held together by a liquid (asphalt tar). Asphalt can flow which makes it great for northern climates but not so great for southern climates. When it gets really hot outside then you can get rutting on highway surfaces but I wouldn't expect anything on your driveway.

Agree with others that this is not as heavy as you may think-my current truck (crew powerstroke F350) weighs right at 8000 lbs empty-no issues with asphalt deformation. Point is to say a relatively mainstream vehicle (super duty) is empty about what your truck would weigh fully loaded. The bigger variable isnt necessarily the truck so much as the quality of your driveway install.
