Can I drop down to 18" for winter with max tow?

In Ontario ?? and looking at ordering Cooper Snow Claw for the winter. I see the spare is an 18" wheel, could I drop from the 275/60R20 or do I have to stick with 20s? Will be ordering new wheels for summer and putting snows on stock wheels. Could I still tow a travel trailer with the snows on with the different sidewall height, now sure if it affects payload? ?

I was faced with the same scenario/question. I found a set of 20" take-offs from a Platinum on Ebay. I bought 4 Nokian Hakkapeliitas and mounted on the newly purchased wheels. All-in for 4 wheels, tires and TPMS sensors, $1950 USD. I decided to stay with the 20s for the same load carrying rating on the tires. In fairness I could have done the same with an 18" wheel, I just happened to find the 20s first. I'm interested to see how this set-up handles my drive to The Tug Hill, NY, in the winter.

I have 18" wheels on my Maxtow Powerboost - no issues at all. You can't run 17" wheels or they won't clear the brake calipers on the back but 18" are fine. Regarding towing it will depend on the specifics of your particular tire - I have run Nokian winter tires in the past on my trucks and they are an E rated tire with no towing restrictions. By far my favorite winter tire I've ever used over the years here in Montana and the mountains in Colorado.

20yrs ago, eBay was pretty popular here, now days not so much. Shipping and import costs make things like wheels not very feasible sadly. Loved eBay back in the day.

I don’t see why not. My PB only has a 1320 payload rating , no max tow though, and this is what I put on for the winter snow tires. At 1250 a tire that should be fine. There is a decrease in the speed rating of 3 km per hour though.

In Ontario as well. The ride is pretty good, not really much different from the 20 inch tires. I couldn’t find any in the 265/70/18 size.

Keep your eyes open for take-off wheels, I see alloy sets in 18" pretty frequently between $500-900 with tires already on them. Even though steelies are the traditional winter tire wheels, there's no rule against using one of the less popular OEM alloy sets and you won't have to worry about rust!

I think tires and wheels have a high border duty tax on them, but I could be wrong. I know I would be adding at minimum 13% tax at the border plus whatever tarrif.

It shouldn’t be an issue, the max tow still comes with 18” wheels when you get the sport package.
