Hi everyone,
— Background —
I’ve had two Tesla Wall Charges for about two years and they work totally fine. I previously had a Taycan charging daily on one with a TeslaTap Mini 80 so I’m pretty sure this works as well.

I’ve purchased a 3rd Tesla Wall Charger (J1772 variant) that is going to be installed outside. Until then I’m stuck charging on a standard 120 outlet.

Why stick with the Tesla Wall Chargers and not the Ford Charge station Pro (I think that is what it’s called) that came with the car - the Wall Chargers talk to one another an load balance.
————

TL;DR if you car fails to charge on a 3rd party charger and won’t start — try and clear the error by using your Ford Mobile Charger

Ok, so I’d been on a longer trip than usual and figured I’d give the truck a boost on my Tesla Wall Charger rather than wait 3 days for the truck to complete charging on the 120.

The truck doesn’t fit in my garage so I decided to drive my car forward a foot so I pull the front end of the truck in so the Wall Charger reached it. The truck now has its front end sticking into the garage but I only need to do it for a couple of hours so no issues.

I plug in my TeslaTap Mini and wait for the Wall Charger to recognize it. Then I plug in the truck and see the charging ring turn blue. I figure it’s charging so I head towards the house. I’m just about to head in when I hear a ticking noise.

When I get back to the truck something isn’t initializing properly. The Wall Charger is clicking on and off and like it’s trying to start. When I get to unplug the truck the charging ring is now red.

No worries, I unplug the Wall Charger and go to start the truck but get the dreaded “pull over immediately” message and the truck won’t go into READY mode and is stuck in park half in my garage and half out.

This bit may help others:
1. Given how much I’ve reset the truck with the neutral recently (I think this is fixed by now by my dealer visit for the TSB) I just decided to do a full power down. After waiting 30 seconds I powered it back up and the error message was still there. Now I’m thinking the truck is going to be stuck there until the dealer can send someone on Monday
2. I looked up the emergency procedure for getting the truck into neutral. Basically it’s foot flat on accelerator and break then you can move the gear shift lever. Once it’s in neutral you need to double press the neutral button near the level. Be careful this is a heavy heavy truck and it started rolling immediately for me.
3. I rolled the truck out a few feet assuming it would stay wherever it stopped for a protracted period of time. I then decided Toto try and plug the truck into the portable ford charger just to see if that even worked. After a few moments “waiting to charge” it started charging.
4. Checking the cab the error message had cleared and I could start the truck again!

If I had to guess the charging subsystem had a hardcore fail error message that wasn’t cleared by popping the neutral. Getting the truck to successfully charge again must of cleared that state and allowed the car to go into Ready mode.

Anyone charging with a Tesla Wall Charger with a TeslaTap Mini? Everything is known good and working so it must be the truck. Just want know if anyone has tried it.

Do you have another J1772 vehicle someone could bring over to try the TeslaTap mini on? How old/what amperage size is the Tesla Tap and your Tesla Wall Connector? IIRC, there were some problems early on when the trucks were first getting delivered with HPWC and TT mini.

I sold my Taycan about 8 months ago and it was working daily on that same Tesla Wall Charger with the TeslaTap Mini. I’m not sure it’s that combo thats the issue.

This is a 2023 Lightning Platinum that made in Q4 2022.

I’m not even sure I could chase this down with Ford and a dealer as it’s an odd use case but it should work.

You didn't answer the questions about age and amperage rating of your Wall Connector and your TT mini.

What was the L2 charging rate for the Taycan? Your truck is asking for 80 Amps, one of the few J1772 vehicles to support 80A. It's possible to have an 80A HPWC and a lower rated, (ex. 48A) TT mini in the middle. That might throw a charging error after working well in the past on ≤ 48A vehicles. Unfortunately you can't control the charging rate from the truck. Software feature miss.

Sorry, this seems like a really sane explanation as well.

My Wall Chargers are about three years old (Gen3). My Taycan had the optional 19.2kw upgrade so theoretically could have pulled the same as the F150 if this is the case. It also didn’t allow you to select the max amps for charging and left that up to the Porsche Mobile Connector.

The TeslaTap mini 80 is about 1.5 years old.

My Wall Chargers are paired and will not draw more than 48amps combined. At the time the other charger wasn’t working so the one plugged into the truck would have been allowed to deliver 48amps.

What Gen WC?

Im using mine on a Gen2 without any issues and mine are set to share a max of 80A. I keep my adapter on the charger and plug it into the truck when I come home.

It shouldn’t be an issue, I’m not sure the Ford recognizes that as a problem. I had a 48A adapter originally that I was using with the Rivian and SR Lightning.

When I bought my Lariat ER, I plugged it in as I usually do. Middle of the night I realized what I did, went oh $hit and ran outside and unplugged a really hot adapter. Luckily the WC had shut down with its internal temp sensor but I definitely almost screwed myself. The truck didn’t seem to care..

Gen3 WC. I did the exact same with the Taycan. The adapter lived on the charger and I just plugged in as soon as I parked.

Interesting story, @JonS. Sorry to hear about all the trouble you've had.

Almost three years ago, I installed a single 2nd generation Tesla Wall Charger on my external garage wall. Initially I used it to charge my 2020 Tesla Model 3 LR.

When I sold the Tesla last year, I purchased two Mustang Mach-Es and this year a 2022 Lightning Lariat ER (7/22 build). The Tesla wall charger has been charging all three Ford EVs successfully, using a TeslaTap Mini 60. My wall charger is derated to 40 amps because the sub-panel in my garage is on a 50 amp breaker.

Very occasionally, the wall charger won't start and I have to reset it by pushing the reset button on the side. But that's the only problem I've experienced.

Just to circle back around on this. I had my J1772 variant Tesla Wall Charger installed outside for my F150. It's running on a clean 60amp line and everything works perfectly.

Eventually I'll get round to testing whether this is a symptom of the two Gen3 Wall Chargers in my garage load balancing and the truck not liking it.
