Yeah, that’s the first Tesla forum I read and it’s full of Wh/mi numbers. Would be like ICE drivers saying their fuel efficiency is 0.05 gallons per mile instead of 20 mpg.
But if Tesla does it, it must be better (really, not poking fun).

Tesla folks - does your car really display that format instead of mi/kWh?

We all have different driving styles and characteristics, so I don't gage 'range' from some type of testing or otherwise 'single-one-off' trip, for ANY vehicle... it's just not that simple. Some LIGHTNING owners complain that they just don't get it, as when they drive long-range at 80 mph in headwinds and -20 temps, the truck just doesn't live up to their expectations... well, duh. Most of the rest of us enjoy it, get used to it, and drive it competently to get a close-to-average to what Ford states, if Not much BETTER...

Yeah I saw that one. I just don’t see where it was showing 2.6 over the last 1200 miles. But thank you! For what his temps are I’d expect better. I pulled 2.9 today in the 50s round trip. Those tires mush be horrible.

20 miles is a horrible range test. If I leave my truck out in the cold, jump straight on the highway for 20 miles I can get as low as 1.3mi/kW, but my truck averages 2.1mi/kW over 20,000 miles.

I would hold off any conclusions until a real full test can be conducted. EPA wise it’s rated to be about 10-15% more efficient than the Lightning. I would say they also have a tendency to inflate their numbers…but I mean I have never gotten 320 miles out of the Ford either.
isnt the 320 based on mixed use with only like 30% being highway or higher speeds? I drive mostly highway at 65-70 and can say 250 miles in good weather is about it, my lifetime average is 1.7 at 30,000.

Yes, based on an 55% mix, it’s rated for 283 miles on highway only - my max was 289 doing all highway except for 2-3 miles. I’ve even gotten 200 miles with a trailer in tow on the highway. But I’ve never gotten over 300…even in mixed usage.

In good weather I’m confident going 260-270 without worrying and will stretch to get to 280+. On bad weather, I’m usually 200-250 depending on how bad the weather is.

i would also expect the charge speed to increase. Tesla has increased charging speeds on their current models after initial rollout.

Absolutely true. These EPA tests are setup for California ranges, not below freezing ranges. When it's winter time I get right around 1.0 mi/kwh, I know you guys further south won't ever understand that.

My only knock on the Lightning is my percentage loss at below freezing is worse than my Model 3. Maybe it's because the size of the vehicle and not because the tech, but it is noticable. Also no heated seats in my 2022 XLT SR apparently costs me about 10 miles in the cold, but I can't confirm this.

Here on the PNW coast I’ve averaged 2.4 mi/kwh (or 416 wh/mi) in 13,400 miles. In our mild winter weather (mid 30’s to mid 50’s) efficiency is all over the place with headwinds the biggest variable followed by the dew point. The latter fogs the truck such that heat mandatory.

I typically average 3.10+ miles/% everyday at ~90-100 miles total commute (ER Lariat)

This isn’t all that surprising. It’s been a pattern for real world Tesla ranges to be 10-20% less than what is advertised. They still compete well against other brands but the Cybertruck must be pulling in a lot of orders from people new to Tesla - since a very optimistic GOM is just part of owning a Tesla (myself included)

You should get the EPA range or better if you are not towing and are driving at or below 55 MPH for the entire trip. Motor Trend did a series of 100% to 5% highway range tests this past summer with their ER XLT. These should represent achievable good-weather highway range and efficency:
  • 55 MPH = 324 miles, for 2.60 mi/kWh
  • 60 MPH = 293 miles, for 2.35 mi/kWh
  • 65 MPH = 268 miles, for 2.15 mi/kWh
  • 70 MPH = 240 miles, for 1.93 mi/kWh (MT's official highway range)
  • 75 MPH = 214 miles, for 1.72 mi/kWh
  • 80 MPH = 194 miles, for 1.55 mi/kWh
Motor Trend recommends frequent short (15-minute) charging stops and 75 MPH cruising for best overall road trip times. Their analysis doesn't seem to account for additional travel time to and from charging stops, so I think it gives unfair advantage to 15-minute stops.

Their results generally match my road-trip experience, where driving at 70 to 75 MPH gets me 1.8 mi/kWh, and 25-30 minute charging stops got me under a 80:20 drive-to-charge split. My truck's overall (14,000 miles including about 4500 miles of road trips) is 2.3 mi/kWh.
