My dealer called to tell me that they had my new wheel in for my Smoked Quartz Lariat. I had not even noticed a scratch on any of my wheels. Upon closer inspection I found a faint scratch on my driver's side front wheel. No big deal, so I decided what the heck, I'll let the dealer replace the wheel.

I got my truck back home and noticed a scratch that I picked up during service. I was not a happy camper. I called the dealership and they took responsibility and have said that they will pay to have it fixed.

So today, I took the truck to the dealer's requested body shop and had them look at it. The body shop told me that it is scratched clear down to the aluminum and in order to fix it right way they will need to paint the whole door. I asked about just doing a touch-up and he told me that we could try that, but he is sure that it will be noticeable. The body shop will have the truck a minimum of three days to repaint the door, with some blending into the back door.

I don't know what to do. I'm just nervous about the new paint matching the existing paint if they repaint the whole door. Any thoughts?

Wow that sucks. Not sure, but maybe try some Dr. Colorchip. If it doesn’t work then go ahead and have them paint it

Let them paint the whole door and blend as necessary. You will never even know it was repainted.

Ford dealers do this type of body work all day every day.
It’s not the dealer, though. It’s their preferred body shop, which can mean any number of things, some of which come back to insurance fraud. if your insurance company’s preferred body shop is the same one, go ahead and use them.

This is a well known body shop in town. They do quality work. However, around 15 years ago I had an Audi A6 that needed a similar repair job. It was that metallic white/cream color. After it was repainted it just didn't look the same. Close, but different. The guy at that body shop (different shop) told me that the metallic white color is the hardest to match. So I'm a little gun shy.

Man don't get the panel blended or painted over that. Just get some touch up paint and blend it in. A new painted panel will never match up, especially at night or under certain lights.

I would see if you could get them to pay you at least some of the money a door paint would cost in cash. .take the money and run. Touch up paint.

I'm hard on vehicles though, I just assume some a-hole in a parking lot is going to ding it anyway. Its inevitable...

paint matching has changed so much in the last 15 years you will never know the difference.

I've made this mistake before of buying a car with multi-chromatic, metallic paint with a BMW. By the time it was 25 years old the clear had faded/flaked away and the body panels looked like a patchwork quilt. There was never a good way to address it short of a completely fresh paint job...which would have been subpar to the original baked-on paint. Meanwhile everyone else with flat paint jobs just knocked a mm off and looked like they had just driven off the lot.

Regardless, it looks so good I bought the same paint as you did for my Lightning. And when the chips come and the fading occurs it'll be a reality that no amount of spot fixing will ever look 100%. Maybe paint has come a long way from then, but you're still dealing with a paint that is designed to look different under different lighting and angles.

If you use some kind of touch-up paint it'll end up looking like a permanent market. Blending the entire door is the best chance you've got of it looking as close to perfect as possible (short of redoing the entire side of the vehicle). At least you haven't had it long enough to see major discrepancies between the new and old panel due to UV exposure.

Hi there, I'd be happy to look into your F-150 concerns on my end. Will you send us a message with your VIN and dealership info? I can look into things on my end.
