I've taken to either waiting the three seconds before touching the handle's capacitive button (still infrequent success), or simply touching the rear handle's button (which seems to work immediately, 100% of the time).
I think it has something to do with the fact that you're using the door you just came out of, and the timing delay serves as a safeguard against an "accidental" press (easier to have happen being that it's capacitive) because it takes a minute for the system to be 100% sure the key is out of the vehicle with you.
I also had no idea simultaneously pressing the bottom two keypad buttons worked; that sounds like a good alternative to touching the back door button.
