Some in favor of Trump’s tariffs
America’s largest primary aluminum producer, Century Aluminum, applauded Trump’s initial reinstatement of a 25% tariff on primary aluminum imports in a news release last month.

“President Trump’s decisive action will protect national security and help level the playing field for America’s aluminum workers,” Century Aluminum CEO Jesse Gary said.

“On behalf of our employees, I thank President Trump for putting America first and strengthening the Section 232 tariffs, which will help drive the resurgence of domestic aluminum production.”

Despite concerns about an increase in the price of cars, some are in favor of the initiative.United Auto Workers Union president Shawn Fain told ABC News that tariffs will benefit his colleagues greatly.

Right and I personally don't disagree with the spirit of that however, these maufacturers cannot simply change their supply chain overnight - even if there was domestic capacity, which I doubt. There's a reason Canada is the primary resource and that reason is not about price alone.

All of these manufacturers would surely source locally IF a reliable supply were available at a competitive price. The hard truth is, manufacturing jobs are very hard to fill in the US. No one wants them for various reasons but mostly due to compensation and job security. In America's manufacturing heyday, labor unions prevailed, delivering those very things.

This administration, in collusion with big business, wants to destroy the last traces of those entities which further debilitates American Manufacturing potential.

The ironies are endless.

Yeah, anyone making the defense "but it will force them to move production locally!" is either foolish or hoping to influence the foolish. It took Ford several years to build REVC where the Lightning is built, and additional years after that in retooling and expansion. You don't just snap your fingers and move production, whether it's aluminum, refined gasoline, or trucks.

A smart person, one that doesn't have a history of bankruptcy, looks for ways to encourage moves in the direction they want to the benefit of those involved. Like tax benefits for local production, government funding for factories and hiring, stuff like that, with the potential for tariffs after maybe five years for those that don't want to participate. It's still a bit strong armed, but you don't crush the company you are trying to encourage in the process under competition restricting price increases.

Something like... the CHIPS act. A strong endorsement for local chip manufacturing that has the backing of people smart enough to know it can't happen overnight.

It is true that manufacturers follow the money and if it is cheaper to make things locally they will but car making business is not very agile and sometimes stability is more important than short term profit. That is why you don't see a lot of manufacturers lining up to invest in countries that have unpredictable systems. If these slow moving businesses think of U.S. as such a country, you will see more money moving out.
