Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a charger success monitoring system that may be used in future Ford EVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on February 16th, 2022, published on January 7th, 2025, and assigned serial number 12187152.
Along with launching the “Charge Angels” program that actively seeks out issues with EV chargers in the U.S., Ford has also filed a number of patents recently that aim to make the process of charging an all-electric vehicle easier and more convenient in the future. That list includes ideas for a charging price evaluation system, an EV charger rating system, and a charger reservation system, to name just a few. Now, this newly published patent keeps that trend going with a new idea for a charger success monitoring system that may be used in future Ford EVs, too.
As Ford points out in this patent, with the number of EVs on our roads steadily increasing, there are also more and more chargers being built, too. However, these chargers can vary greatly in terms of what type of connectors they offer, as well as charging speeds, availability, reliability, and location, among other factors. As such, it sees a need for a system that would be able to pair EV drivers with the best possible charger near them, which is precisely what we’re looking at here.
When it receives a charging request, this proposed system would take into account a vehicle’s attributes and EV chargers along its route to determine the best possible unit, and it would lean on real-time data in many cases. This includes not only advertised charging rates, but also, the rates that customers are actually getting, plus things like charger success rates and availability. From there, the system would recommend a charger to the EV user, and if they agree with that selection, they could simply press a button to navigate there – making for a potentially very useful feature, if it ultimately comes to fruition.
