Is there a way to force the HVAC’s recirculation mode to stay on? I manually turn it on (in heat mode) and after several minutes, it automatically switches off to bring in outside air.

The only time it will automatically switch to outside air is if you have the windshield defroster venta selected. There is no way to disable that

If you don't have the defroster vents selected, it will stay im recirculation.
I have the vents manually set to floor and front/face/whatever. Recirc turns off after several minutes. If I turn it back on, it will turn off again after a few more minutes.

There's a point at which you need some fresh air.

The CO2 concentration in a vehicle with just one occupant can rise to over 4000 ppm with windows closed and recirc on. 1000 is considered the top end of acceptable. At concentrations above 2500, decision making performance drops to 50%. Of course, your cognitive ability to remember to turn the recirc off reduces as well.

Astronauts reported an doubling of headache incidence for every 1300 ppm increase in CO2 levels.

So, probably a good idea to have it automatically force some fresh air into the cabin and this is probably why Ford incorporated this feature.

I do miss the old days where the recirc was a manually controlled slider. I usually had it on about 75% recirc / 25% fresh air in the winter. This kept the cabin humidity down without needing the AC compressor running. And kept the air from getting stale. In the summer, more like 90% recirc.

The CO2 level is a very real concept I've actually never seen talked about with vehicles. In commercial buildings, we use CO2 level to modulate the fresh air fans. We never let the CO2 go above 1000.

Just the opposite in my wife's Toyota Corolla - any time you turn on the AC, it automatically goes into recirc. Have to turn it off since it makes no sense to get into a 140 degree car and have recirc on.

It'll cycle the fresh air vent after a period of time, I've noticed this with max-defrost as well.

There is a way to keep it in recirculation mode:

  1. Turn off auto mode and set temperature manually
  2. Manually select the front facing vents and/or the feet vents (do not select defrost vent -- this is the key!)
  3. Select recirculation mode

The truck should keep it in recirculation mode and remember it upon restart -- mine does. This works on both the 12" and 15" screens.

Don’t use “Auto” and direct air to the dash only. It should stay on under those conditions.

Maybe it works for dash, but it does not work for the floor vents. I'll try that, but I really need the heat at my feet. The rest of me stays warm with the heated seat and setting heat to 62 at my feet was still enough to keep the windshield defrosted with recirculated air. I've been fighting this issue since day one and I've never used auto because I want to control everything.
On my 7 hour drive home last Sunday I probably pushed that button hundreds of times. I tried to push it lightly because I figure I'm going to wear the decal off of it! My assumption is that it monitors humidity and turns it off at a certain level. On my last trip it would shut off at exactly one minute every time, but most of the time it is a random interval between 1 and 10 minutes.

Ah, I now see that you have an XLT. My experience reported above is for the Sync4A (15”) controls. Yours may behave differently.

I could get the recirculation to stay on as described above, but it only lasted until shutdown.
On the next startup the system returned to normal {manual settings unchanged, except the recirculation switched off} 22 Lariat-ER

BTW -edit- The Secretary of my Treasury wasn't happy with that mode of operation, her tootsies were chilly, so back to auto for us.
