Mine used to do this to me. I had a bad ground. The way the charger is designed, if the ground floats, it will cause the temperature sensors to read inaccurate values.
In my case, a bunch of ground wires from nearby outlets all met at a nail going into a stud in the wall's dead space and the now rusty, 50+ year old nail was part of the circuit connecting all of the grounds together. I ran a new dedicated appropriately sized ground to the box and everything has worked fine since then.
Great tip. Since my other charger is working fine with the outlet, and wiring for this outlet is new, I didn't consider that possibility for my case but my house is super old and I have no GFCI anywhere so I could have all kinda ground problems.
Edit: I did have a branch knocking out the neutral off the pole across the street a few months back that partially fried my stereo. So there is a chance, it weakened a few components in the charger then. Who knows.
