Last gasp for my Ford mobile charger ?

Our Mach E’s Ford mobile charger died (red light of death) after about 18 months & 40,000 miles charging 5-6 days a week at 240V. The replacement is a backup charger now or used at 120V occasionally. I use a Charge Point Home Flex for 30 Amp 240V charging. It has worked great for 2+ years.

I would be very happy if I could get 40K out of it. I am not sure when mine started overheating. I noticed it was charging slower around 7K and checked out the output at 8K. If it gave me the option to charge at 24 Amps, it would probably last a little longer.

I would be very happy if I could get 40K out of it. I am not sure when mine started overheating. I noticed it was charging slower around 7K and checked out the output at 8K. If it gave me the option to charge at 24 Amps, it would probably last a little longer.

I meant to say the replacement is a backup/120V charger. My read is could not handle the 240V use at ~30 amps. I agree a lower rate might’ve allowed longer life.

However it is 42F outside so I am guessing a component is going bad inside the charger that is causing overheating (not noticeable by touching the charger).

If the warranty is a year, I am out of luck. Besides, I think I was not suppose to get the charger with my 23 to begin with.
If your truck is older than 23, I think it was included, if a 2023, Check your window sticker, you probably paid $500 for it, and either way I think it is covered 3yr/36k miles

Check your window sticker, you probably paid $500 for it, and I think it is covered 3yr/36k miles
Ford did replace it. But I still bought the Charge Point Home Flex. It’s positioned such that it can charge either vehicle though it’s mostly on the LT.

Not sure where the impression that the FMC was not suppose to be the main home charging option came from. I admit it is much flimsier than the tesla mobile charger but I would hope it was designed for long life. I have the Ford Power station but don't intend to use it unless my mobile charger dies. The FMC is my only home charging option right now.

I agree. I've never heard of a charging unit advertised for intermittent or mobile use only. If it can't last forever under continuous use, it's a bad design.

Anecdotally, there have been many reports of failures. The design is not robust.

Mine is 23 and it was not included but the dealer was nice enough to give me one. So I am not going to push my luck for something I know is not going to last for daily use. I have a really good portable unit for now but will have to do some research to see what is the most reliable charger under 40/48 Amp.. I probably will never charge over 32.

Looks like I’ll have to prepare myself for possible replacement sooner than I hoped. Fortunately there are more than a few alternatives.
Not everyone has a failure. People with failures are most likely to relate their experience. I got my FMC when I bought my Mach-E in 2021. I only use it when I travel and it’s been fine. I’ll continue to use it as my only EVSE when traveling, but I wouldn’t rely on it for everyday charging.

Mine is 23 and it was not included but the dealer was nice enough to give me one. So I am not going to push my luck for something I know is not going to last for daily use. I have a really good portable unit for now but will have to do some research to see what is the most reliable charger under 40/48 Amp.. I probably will never charge over 32.
Emporia. $399. Don't overthink it.

Agree with that 100%.
My point in replying to him is that all of these are not destined to fail. Some people have used the FMC as their only home charger for 3+ years without a problem.

Mine used to do this to me. I had a bad ground. The way the charger is designed, if the ground floats, it will cause the temperature sensors to read inaccurate values.

In my case, a bunch of ground wires from nearby outlets all met at a nail going into a stud in the wall's dead space and the now rusty, 50+ year old nail was part of the circuit connecting all of the grounds together. I ran a new dedicated appropriately sized ground to the box and everything has worked fine since then.
