The claim that Tesla is the only charging network that is "actually making money" and/or breaking even... Well, yeah, I am going to challenge that one. Most of the Supercharger locations that I have encountered in my travels look like this.
You obviously don’t live in Southern California! The chargers down here are always busy.

Tesla has stated that they run the SC network at or near breakeven. Look at the financials of any public charging network company and you’ll see they are far from breakeven.

And then look at NEVI funding bids. Tesla bids are anywhere from 10% to 50% cheaper than others. That gives you an indication on how inexpensive their hardware and install costs are compared to others.

Yes, new NEVI funding requires longer cables, Magicdocks, CC readers and screens. All of which costs more money, which the govt pays for.
NEVI funding pays a portion of the cost.

Well, the country is bigger than California.

There are a lot of Superchargers out there sitting idle. Opening them up turns the Supercharger network into a real business that can stand up on its own.

still listed as an "up coming product" 3 1/2 months after your post we're still waiting. But note that you'll still need your adaptor. what I'd like to see is a 4 foot cord that replaces the need for our adaptor. NACS female on one end and CSS male on the other end.

UPDATE: It's now mid september and the above cable is still listed as "coming soon".

I have run wiring to Tesla Superchargers- it is much cheaper & uses less wire to have the chargers on a curb. It also allows easier maintenance if a line ever fails.

You would think there would be conduit ran to each individual charger- but nope. The three that I did were direct bury.

But having the curb allows the 3 phase transformer to be located closer to the chargers. Also remember this is all underground construction so costs are 10x -15x higher than overhead.

While having the Supercharger in the middle of a parking lot with open stalls on both sides would be amazing, the costs would be astronomical.

Gas stations bury their tanks to allow closer point-of-use access. There is no one that will pay to run manholes for a submersible transformer to do the same. Maybe a high-rise in a pricey, downtown megacity.
