I hope that doesn't pass and go into law. I am so tired of politicians doing stunts for attention. This guy got some free press over this.

It's only a stunt until enough whaq jobs push it through. Everything is now fair game to a crowd of folks who don't want to think about why they're irrationally angry.

I assume it really means publicly funded free electricity. A lady nearby plugged into a school outlet and got arrested for theft. EV owners can and should pay their fair share.

I'm not saying that there should be no consequences to taking a bit of electricity, but if someone is plugged in for around an hour they took 1.5 kWh of electricity, so probably between a dime and two quarters worth of electricity. How does the community feel about someone plugging in a cell phone or a laptop computer and charging from an outlet outside a public building? How would they feel if someone was inside the building while charging the laptop? At what $$$ figure does taking public electricity become a problem?

Street lights are publicly funded free electricity. Its a public benefit at a public costs. I believe the benefit to the community of promoting pollution free transportation in dense city centers is worth the minor cost. I think we all understand that "free" chargers will go extinct on their own, there is no need to force it at extra cost.

These free chargers rarely do more than a few kWh. The cost is negligible, and for the same $50k they want to spend removing it, they could run them for a decade.

I rather doubt power for your personal/commercial use is the same as a street light now is it? One could make an argument for de minimis.

The argument should have been to make users pay for the use. One of my HOA's has a fishing well. That is an extra cost on top of my year charge. Fair use is the key word.
No, I don't want to pay for others use. I don't care if it is 50 cents for 50 cents.

You'd have to vote on it or have some socialist offer it.
The City of Austin currently offers a ridiculous program for charging. For the paltry sum of $4.17 a month one can not only charge at home but at any PIE Austin L2 station. Yes, my electric company offers a GENEROUS time of use but that is related to how costly a gas generator is. Nuclear can run all night for cheap.

Would I take advantage of the Austin PIE program if I could? You betcha. They'd just get me on a different tax. Nothing is free.
