I have setup profiles for myself and my wife, but wanted to have my picture as the avatar instead of the ford provided logos. Every time I tried to change to a picture it complained that I had to set a picture in the default contact. I had that set already in my iPhone, but it still wouldn’t take.

After some Google searching I figured out it was due to me having multiple entries for myself in my contacts list, even though only one was set as my contact. I removed the other ones and then had to resync the contacts to the truck using Bluetooth (you have to disconnect CarPlay to do this part). Once I did that, I was able to select my profile picture.

Just wanted to document this in case anyone else was having the same issue!

Thanks for that update - I tried changing my picture to one of my dogs and I've failed at everything it told me to do. I don't sync my contacts from my phone to the truck, but it has noted contacts needed to be synced. How does the truck know which contact in the phone is you? Will if find that contact by default. I know Apple marks the owner contact, I don't know if Android does or not.

I have the photo updated on my Ford App and on my Online Ford account - you'd think that would be good enough. It's just crazy I have to sync my contacts. I'll guess I'll have to find where to do that and then update my phone pic with the one of the dogs and then sync it.

Android should have a "me" contact as well (I've been off Android for a while, so I don't remember exactly). And yes, it does require you to sync all of your contacts via bluetooth as well to get the picture over.

I think it may also be doing a search just based on your name in the profile. I haven't verified that, but I assume that's why it failed for me at first (because I had multiple Eric Pullen's in my contact list)

Well - I've gone back to the truck and selected the iPhone under Bluetooth rather than Car Play - it told me it needed access to my contacts, so I finally found that is under the BLuetooth profile on the phone- granted access to the contacts and they downloaded to the truck.

Went back into the truck profile setup and it wouldn't find the picture, it still told me it needed access to the contacts. I realized I only had my first name in the truck - so I updated to make it match first and last name so it matches me in the phone contact list. STill nothing. I've ensured that my contact on my phone is selected to be the "owner' of the phone or in other words - it knows which contact is connected to my phone and apple accounts.

But - still no pic of dogs for me. The pic does show up in my phone contacts.

Maybe it will sync over time or I'll find the nuance. This is a minor one for now.

It truly seems like the truck profile setup doesn't realize that I've not let it have access to the contacts. Seems they need to reset a flag once I let them download that they are there so the profile will try to access them.

Oh Ford. What do I expect from your software ane error messages? Too much I guess.

After multiple attempts, I finally discovered a reliable solution. The main steps are as follows:
  1. Ensure there are no duplicate personal name records in the contact.
  2. After connecting your phone via Bluetooth, locate your phone in the "phone list" and select the first option "phone". This step is crucial, as only by choosing "phone" can the car read the avatar from the phone.
  3. If the above step does not work, delete the Bluetooth connection to the phone, then search for and reconnect to the phone via Bluetooth, and repeat the above steps.
