What are you paying for registration?
I was watching a review on the lightning and the guy said due to the weight of the vehicle, he is paying $1000 to register it. Does that sound right? Seems a tad steep to me, even for California.
Or is that an additional tax to make up for lost gas tax income?

My tags renew next month at $1,024. It’s due to the weight of the vehicle and being charged a flat rate for gas tax.
I don’t mind as I drive 50k plus miles a year so California has lost a ton of gas tax revenue from me.

I was shocked at the cost of registering my Lightning in CA. It's like paying an additional month for my mortgage. I would be ok with the cost, IF California said the registration was good for two years.

Mine was 1200. It’s a lot but it is what it is. No smog certificates in my future.

$1,050 in San Bernadino County if I register it in LA county would be more.

Over a grand but the cost is also a factor as well as the commercial tags

$1200, still cheaper than gas.

Yup, $1000-ish bucks.

Pick up trucks in California are registered as commercial vehicles by default. If you add a "permanent" cap and then fill out paperwork with DMV, you can get it switched to private. I was told by DMV that this would save some $$$.

YMMV.

If they catch you with anything in the bed w/o commercial plates there is a hefty fine

It was a bit over $1,000 when I bought mine in late February. I will have a shell on it for around 11 months of each year, but did not attempt to get a non-commercial registration on this or my previous pickup. As previously noted, put damn near anything in the bed that can in any way be considered commercial (including bringing home your groceries) can result in a large fine. And if you are never going to put anything in the bed, why buy a pickup?

Just to be clear, the actual difference in fees between a Ford F-150 Lightning and Ford F-150 for California are:
  • Commercial Weight Fee difference: $186 (CVC §9400)
  • Zero Emission Vehicle Fee in place of gas tax: $118. It's a road improvement fee baked inside the vehicle registration fee. (CVC §9250.6)
  • Total $304 (could vary a bit because of inflation indexing)
I'll gladly pay the difference. The rest of the $1000+ is standard CA charges.
