What do you think the Range potential on a longer 6.5’ bed Lightning might be ?
500?

I traded in a 6.5’ bed SuperCrew F150 for the lightning, but I will miss the foot and half of bed length for sure.

That trade-in was the first truck I ever had that didn’t have a full 8 foot bed, and I managed fine with the 6.5’ bed, and I actually think the 6.5’ bed “looks” more balanced proportionally to the length of the SuperCrew cab than either the long 8 foot or the short 5 foot.

I know I’m in the minority of people who like the longer beds, and I had many the salesman try to talk me into the short 5 foot bed in years past, because the 6.5’ were hard to find with a SuperCrew (never mind the 8 foot, which only Tundra’s still make I think).

Of course the Lightning only has the short bed, so it was time to let go of my 6.5’ bed, to go EV.

Still, I wonder what demand there would be for the 6.5’ bed, and with all this talk of range anxiety, just imagine how much more range Ford might squeeze into the truck if it had another foot and half in length to work with!

Maybe someday…..?

Only when Ford has enough capacity, they might have a ER version long bed with 250miles range. It just does not make sense within 2 years.

Like 5%, so another 15 miles? You're only talking another foot and the truck is already 20+. Then there is payload concerns.

However, I would prefer a 6.5 super can for sure.

I’m with you on the 6.5-foot bed. I’m crazy enough to be planning to tow a fifth wheel with the Lightning and I’d appreciate the extra length.

I think it’s a real possibility for the second generation Lightning in a few years. I just doubt that Ford’s going to put in the extra engineering effort for this generation when they’re selling every truck they can make.

I too, would like a longer bed.

Your specific question is hard to answer because I can’t find dimensions of the current battery pack. But by looking at cutaway graphics, it looks like another foot of wheelbase could allow an increase in battery size of something like 25%. Just my guess.

If I had to guess, if Ford offered a 6.5' bed Lightning, it would be with the shorter Supercab configuration to keep everything else (frame, battery, EV drivetrain) the same. Could likely do a single cab and 8' bed as well.

I don't see them doing any reengineering of the battery or frame.

Honestly, I doubt they will offer any other configurations because they can sell everything they build with the setup they have.

Yeah, I don’t think there’s much debate about that. Until production of the current configuration can meet demand, there’s little to no chance of other configurations being introduced.

It's not the length of the bed, it's the way you use it. Or it's the tension in the suspension. Or something, I dunno.

Kidding aside this does feel like a theoretically possible thing, but we know (?) there's a "ground up" design coming for the Lightning next generation replacement, and it's very possible that it will have more options in configuration. Battery capacity and chip capacity will (theoretically) be sorted enough by then, and the market will have accepted the whole idea of an electric Ford pickup enough (hopefully) that more combinations will be viable.

Btw it's a 5.5 foot bed in the Lightning so it's only a foot shorter than what you currently have. Bed size is a concern for me too so every inch helps. No I'm not going to make a joke there.....

good point!

My bad.

Maybe it just “feels“ like a 5 foot bed 🤔 compared to the 6.5’.

At 5’6” , it’s so close to Section 179 full depreciation size (that requires 6’ minimum bed length for 100% depreciation)……

I wonder if Ford would be compelled for at least the Pro Series to offer a longer 6’ + bed to have big tax advantages that come with it to the business owner.

though I’d like the tax benefit on the Lariat long bed too ! 😁

I don't think the range increase would be that big, really. 25% maybe?

My plan is a lightning 145", and a superduty Screw/6.75'. Very different roles between the two. May eventually replace the lightning with an electric Explorer even.
