It's got four wheels - Waiting on my '22 Lightning
So on my way into work tonight, I'm tooling along listening to a podcast, cruise control set, and just having a good time.....apparently with the foot pressed on the accelerator when my friendly neighborhood police explorer just lit me up. Apparently hit 50 in a 30 (whoops!) and was totally oblivious to it. Had a nice chat with the officer, and he kindly let me off (thank God for politeness and a Veteran's plate.) I generally set my cruise for 5 over and just tool along, but apparently tonight was an exception.

I've noticed that you just have no freaking clue how fast you're going in the Lightning sometimes. My kids would have dimed me out in a heartbeat if they were in the truck with me.

This made me think, how many have been involved in a roadside chat with your friendly neighborhood law enforcement?

Combined with the height off the road, which makes me feel like I am going much slower, I end up in the same situation all the time, 50's in a 35 before I realize it.

Side note, I was being tailed by my town cop for a bit after I passed the police station right after I got mine. I was sure he was going to pull me over, mostly because my dealer accidentally wrote 2021, not 2022 on my temporary registration sticker. Luckily he didn't notice. Thankfully I don't need the sticker anymore.

I didn’t realize how big of a factor NVH was in perception of speed until I got this truck. With my wife in the truck, I can get away with a lot more in this. Some of it may be size and height of it that makes her feel safer but lack of engine noise is definitely a biggie. If I get in trouble with the law, it would be in short trips. On longer road trips, I am usually on cruise chilling with a podcast. Sound system on Pro is much nicer than I expected and the quiet ride is helping it too. I listen to music a bit more than I did in my old truck. All the speed cameras and traffic is helping me in behaving but occasionally, I can’t help putting those ponies to the test for a few seconds. People can freak out when they see something this big appears out of nowhere. So I do my best not to be that guy but sometimes the devil inside want to take a peak outside 👿.

The funny thing is that I constantly found this happening (speeding without realizing it, not actually getting tickets for it) in my first year of owning my Mach-E. In my past 2 months with my Lightning, I find that I am always either going a couple under the speed limit or no more than 3-4 MPH over. Maybe I've just gotten used to the feel of EVs in the past couple years.

My friends mom has an EV and while riding in the back of the vehicle, she would be going from 25mph to 85mph at random. Highway, city street, didn't matter... speed was constantly changing regardless of the speed limit and always nonsensical. I was told "she never did this in her old car," while all the passengers feared for their lives. Don't be like this woman!

I got pulled over in Texas small town just off the highway going to a local fast charger for not having a front license plate on my 2019 Niro EV (now sold). Even though it’s a misdemeanor, so many people run around in Texas without front license plates I was really surprised to get pulled over. I just had to send in a picture of the license plate on my car and $20 to the city clerk’s office to get the citation cancelled.

I gave up speeding decades ago because I got sick of always having to look over my shoulder. The company I work for now makes me take defensive driving training every three years so I can check out their cars when I need to. With the defensive driving training drilled into my head I don’t even go five miles over the speed limit anymore.

Another thing that keeps me from speeding is my experience with long distance EV driving. Range and efficiency have been so critical on many of my long distance EV trips that speeding really wasn’t an option. Most of the time on long EV trips range really isn’t an issue but being careful is just a habit I have gotten into.

For those people that say that they feel like they are going slower in a F150L, I have to say that I think that’s a bunch of hogwash. I think the people saying that are just not paying attention or are complacent about their speed. I perfectly understand, I have to use cruise control all the time to keep my mind off of my speed.

She was probably used to driving a certain way in a car that was a whole lot slower and more consistent at holding speed. I know a couple people who drive like this. They have no clue, don't pay attention to their speed. Some people are just terrible at judging speed and distance no matter what.
